Hi guys, I have inherited a 1961 Strat in need of some TLC, I would like to restore it to its original colour as my uncle once saw fit to strip it and take a tin of black friar varnish to it  Is there any way I could find out what the original colour was? I vaguely remember it being a vivid green and would love for it to be back to its former glory!!

Many thanks in advance!!

There were three green Duco lacquer finishes available at that time: Surf Green and Sea Foam Green (both of them light pastel shades of similar color and spectral intensity), and Sherwood Green Metallic (a very dark shade with only minimal metallic component).

It may be possible to find some of the guitar's original color within the body's screw and nail holes, or inside the neck pocket, the control cavity, or the bridge/tremolo rout. An optivisor may be needed to see these vestiges.

Don't forget also to post a video once you've finished the restoration!

The Sherwood Green sounds right I remember it being a dark colour but we are talking 30+ years since I last seen it and I was only young! Will definitely post some before and after pics, could anyone suggest a reputable firm who does this sort of work?

I remember reading somewhere that Lake Placid Blue would turn Green over time. It could be Teal Green.

Here is a 1965 Stratocaster Lake Placid Blue that has turned green. I believe it turned green because the clear coat has yellowed with age.
