Hi Everyone,
I am a huge huge U2 and The Edge fan and looking into buying a Fender Telecaster currently.
I currently own an Fender Mexico Stratocaster Standard (which was my first guitar), a Gibson Explorer and a Gibson Les Paul. With all those guitars I am of course (*sight*, fan bullshit ^^) orientating on the finishes Edge has, so the Strat comes black/white, the explorer in natural and the Les Paul in white.

I am looking to buy a Telecaster that somehow comes closes to the Tele Edge has used during his tour. See this pic:

What do you think which Tele model and finish this is? I think it just looks really great!

I found a few people thinking this is an blonde finish, but I dont think thats right because this looks more creamy yellow and the blonde finish looks more brown to me. To me that one in the pic looks like an white finish that became older over the years or some vintage finish.
This is why I am now thinking about buying a Fender American Tele Special Olympic White. Because a) it seems like a good buy for the money and b) I hope the Olympic White might get the same creamy yellow finish over the (probably lots of) years. Look for example this video of an older olympic white finish.

What do you think what type of Tele the Edge is using?
And do you think the American Special Tele OW is a good alternative here?

Thanks for replying chanman246. Is it known what finish this guitar has?

Yeah The Edge has a nice Tele. If you get an OW American Special you will have to wait more years than Edge's Tele before it turns yellow. The UV resistors in today's polyurethane are much more powerful than what Fender was using in '68. For all I know that could be a nitro topcoat on The Edge's Tele and that will yellow and fade FAST.

Fender doesn't offer much today off the production line in terms of vintage white. See the color chart here: http://www.fender.com/support/colorchar ... e&color=65
I guess you'll have to go the Custom Shop route and work with them to get a color exactly like Edge's Tele if you have deep pocket$$$.

Or for a more realistic budget and if close is good enough, try looking at the Blond Road Worn Tele.

Or....the closest thing I can think of is the California Series Tele from the late 90's. They came in a vintage white that was more yellow. For exampls here is one on ebay http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vi ... 602_263622
You would need to switch out the stock bridge and neck pickup, and get rid of those ugly control knobs the seller put on, but you'd be close to Edge's Tele. I'm not sure if it a good price though. I don't know what California Tele's are going for these days, you don't see then often.

I recently played a Blonde Road Worn Tele when looking for my new one, and i must say I NEARLY THOUGHT about buy a road worn because it felt and sounded pretty good.

So if you're happy to buy a guitar that is pre-worn, then the blonde road worn looks pretty close to Edges...

Thanks for all your replies. Well a lot of choices with ups and downs depending on each option *sight* :-)
But anyway the information about the quality of todays finishes and the fact they hardly get the vintage style in a reasonable number of years is very worthy.

Looks like I really need to go to my local dealer and talk with him about the choices and test some of the guitars mentioned here (which is a good thing to do anyway).

One thing I recently stumbled on is this auction on ebay:
http://cgi.ebay.de/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vie ... 0557823048

An Fender American Standard Tele. Looks _damn_ close to me. What do you think, would this standard tele be a good option?

That does look close! I did not know Fender offered a vintage white option for American Series Teles in 2003. It looks 100% legit. I say go for it. Good luck.

I just did it!! :D :D
And won the auction. And I am soooo happy!

Thanks for the friendly support in this forum, greatly apprectiated,
and a good place to be, I should certainly hang around here more often ^^.
You saved me of buying some mexican (although I love my mexican strat!!) or different copy waiting 20+ years for getting the guitar and finish I want ;-)
But you helped to show up a good number of alternatives!!!!

Seems to be the second good thing after my first overseas buy from ebay.com, the Gibson Explorer Natural.

Love it to have a couple of guitars with a nice story around it!

Time for a party weekend! Thanks guys!!
Will post pictures as soon as it is here and tell how the story ended.

Yes this is a really great feeling ^^ and very exciting.

I am playing since two years now and try to get into the different U2 sounds over the decades by getting the required range of guitars for that. As you see I am also trying to get somehow the similar guitars when it comes to the finish or type like edge's guitars. It is for sure an irrational fan thing, but anyway.

While I've found it an easy decision to get the "right qualitly" for reasonable beginner budget when it comes to a Les Paul (=> Gibson Les Paul Studio), Stratocaster (=> Fender, Mexico because it was the first one I bought when I started learning) and Explorer (Gibson Explorer Natural), I think it is very hard to get into the different wide range and versions of a Fender Telecaster.

But I think (or hope ^^) when it comes to the budget of about 1000 USD, in a choice between a new Mexico Tele, American Special, Highway One or a used American Standard, the American Standard is a good choice (I guess so)?!

Anyway in the end I am terrible happy to get the exactly right guitar I now wanted, with your guys help, the absolutely right finish, and a real Fender USA that time.

"Edge" doesn't only play Fenders and Gibsons.

On the recent U2 shows, we see him using double-cutaway Gretsch Country Gentlemen (shown below) and 12-string Rickenbacker 300 and 330/12s (as pictured on the 2nd photo below the 1st).

Here's a shot of "Edge" playing a Natural Ash Telecaster. This particular guitar is a mid-to-late 1970s "notchless" model with a rosewood fingerboard.

"Edge" was seen frequently with a 50th Anniversary Custom Ivory/Gold Telecaster on his hands. The guitar pictured below was made in Japan in 1999.
