Just got a mexican strat and the handbook says there is a spring in the threaded hole that the tremelo arm fits into and to put a peice of tape over the hole so as not to loose the spring. Well either I,m not reading it right or I,ve lost my spring. Truth is I don,t remember there ever being one in there. So does any one know where I can get a spring from? when I surf the net all I get is tension springs for the block.

To tell the truth,I've been playing Strats for almost 40 years and the only springs I have seen were pictures in the manuals. :D

Ah yes, the mysterious little black trem arm spring. Luckily they are sold in packs of 12 because they are easy to lose. http://www.guitarpartsresource.com/trem_usastrat.htm

Only U.S. Strats come with the trem arm spring as far as I know. The little round sticker that the factory puts on the bridge over the trem arm hole keeps the spring from falling out while the guitar ships and sits in the guitar store.

I had a 2000 MIM Standard Strat and the trem arm hole went ALL the way through the trem block, so I couldn't use a spring if I wanted to since it would fall out the other end! I'm not sure if the post 2006 upgraded bridge on the MIM Stds can use the spring. I'm also not sure if the MIM Classics bridge can use the spring. But I do know that US Standards and US Vintage Reissues can use the spring. Maybe someone can enlighten us on the current MIM Stds and Classics.

I hate to nit-pick, but that number 0050922000 Spring, Tremolo is referring to the three tremolo springs, not the little trem arm spring. I don't see the part number for the spring in the list, so maybe MIM Stds still don't come with the spring?

The part number for the spring is 0012180000 Spring, Tremolo Arm. This much I know because I ordered a pack of those little springs after I got my American Strat. http://www.fender.com/support/diagrams/ ... 02CPg3.pdf

Any tech should have the very small black spring that will fit the hole,
here's a tip, before you put it in(the spring that is) roll the spring in a little bit of Vaseline, believe it, it will hold the spring down in place even when you remove the trem arm. i've been doing it for 15 years and have never lost the little black spring!

I thought it's purpose was to slightly stiffen the movement of the arm without having to over-tighten it and maybe strip the thread or snap it. I'd wait for a more informed opinion than mine though, I can't seem to find the link where I got that from... :)

Hi guys,

I heard that Fender only put in the springs in the old more hardened steel tremoloblocks and not nowadays because the string could harm the the thread of the softer modern type of blocks. Makes sense, however I don't know how to determine if the block is hard enought, so I just put in the new spring in mine and it works.
On the other hand, I also posses a Stratocaster where the spring does not come out anymore because of the fact that it has probably eaten itself in the thread and or the steel. So beware. It still does its job, however.

I used to use cigarette papers. Now I just dont bother with anything at all. You never notice a bit of play in the arm when your gigging. It only ever becomes a issue when you play alone and focus too much attention elsewhere.
