Some sellers on eBay are saying that all Squiers were made in Japan/Korea/other Asian countries. Well, my Candy Apple Red Squier that I bought brand new in 1998 says "Made in Mexico" on the back of the headstock and has the following serial number: MN894124.

Is this a unique model? Any info on this model and Mexican Squier Strats will be very much appreciated.

Interesting. One of my Squiers says "made in the USA" on the headstock.

Some sellers on ePay are pretty full of it.

can't say I know anything about Mexi Squiers though.

Apparently, they've been made all over the world, including in the US.
A bit of info on Wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Squier#Ser ... er_tracing.

Thanks everyone! Yeah, I saw the new Squiers at Guitar Center yesterday and the workmanship is crap - made in China.

I assume you're talking about the Bullet or Affinity series. Because the Deluxes and the CV's that I've played were absolutely amazing and the craftsmanship was superb.

Might wanna be a little more specific then just saying the Squiers were crap.

I have a 93 MIM Squier.

Unfortunately there appears to be little info out there as far as spec details. Screamin Jay said the pups were ceramic and the trem block is significantly smaller. I'm really curious about the body wood. The neck on mine is really great and has darkened nicely over the past 16 years. It's a great backup to my Hwy1.

sweet pic man! I love when people wall mount their guitars. I'm always leery of guitar stands because the arm that sits on the back of the neck always just seems like a bad idea to me.

String tension pulling on the headstock, guitars weight leaning on it's neck pushing forward, just seems like a good way to get a warped neck.

I keep mine in flight/hard cases, but one of these days I really want to set up my place to look more like yours. Where I can just grab one off the wall.

very nice. :)

I picked up a beautiful 1998 Made-in-Mexico Squier Strat about a week ago from my local Craigslist for a hundred bucks (with a Marshall amp, too). Awesome guitar. Candy apple red body with maple fretboard. Skunk stripe down the back. Woods are excellent and the finish is just right on all parts. I opened it up to clean the pots with contact spray and check out the wiring. Extremely neat wiring job inside. Great workmanship. Plays, feels and sounds fantastic. IMO, it compares very favorably to the 2 MIM Fender Standard Strats I have.

I would have to agree with Malikon in reference to your evaluation. I haven't seen or played any of this years Squiers...my wife has barred me from going into my local Guitar Center for a while (mainly because this last year I've bought 2 new guitars...both Squiers...then built a third, bought and refinished a used Yamaha bass -and- bought a used Alesis electronic drum kit), but in general it's been my experience that Squiers are typically very good instruments for the money.

Now I would like to put some extra emphasis on "for the money". For the money my little Squier Bullet which I bought brand new last year for $100 is actually a great guitar. This is simply a matter of perspective...if you're going to compare it with a $1200 instrument let alone a $4000 Custom Shop instrument, then no...it's pretty insignificant. However compared with other $100 instruments I've owned and/or played over my 25+ years of playing...brands such as Cort, Memphis, First Act and Lotus just to name but a few, then it is simply an EXCELLENT little guitar. Ok...the body on my Bullet is basswood...at least it's REAL wood and not some cheap laminate or ply. More over the neck is actually very nice and playable...pretty good feel for what it is. For $100 instrument and to have something around the studio for others to beat on, it actually does a very good job.

Now on the other end of the scale, I have an '08 Squire Standard "Special" and that is simply a great instrument! The moment I spotted this thing last summer at Guitar Center, I pretty much fell in love with it, LOL! The finish and the workmanship are simply top notch even for an instrument costing 2 or 3 times as much (actually, the finish on that puppy is just incredible!). In fact my only real gripe about my Squire Standard is simply the bridge...or more specifically the low mass trem block. I'd put a steel or brass trem block on this sucker in a heartbeat but unfortunately short of a custom order, they're rather hard to come by. I did swap out the pickups...I had a set of Fender VN's laying around that came out of my '96 MIM Strat when I put Duncans in her but that has nothing to do with the workmanship of the instrument (or even the original pickups really...they actually do sound pretty decent...the VNs are just better). Beyond that the only other thing I've done (except for string changes and setups) is swap out the "mint green" pickguard and pup covers for white...and that was strictly an aesthetic choice (I really hated that stupid green...blechh! LOL!!!). Otherwise this is really a great instrument...good sound, plays nice, holds the tuning well, easy to set up...even the fretwork is decent!

Sorry but your comment simply sounds like another of those "all Squiers are crap" posts that get flung around by ignorant folk who think that all things made in China must be junk. I don't know if this was your situation or not but it's been my experience that a lot of people will see something like a Squier, see that it's "Made in China" and shuck the thing off without even playing it. It always makes me wonder if they do the same thing with their TV sets or microwave ovens or X-Boxes! LOL!!! I also love how their commentaries about such things don't generally go too far beyond "they suck" or "they're crap"...ya just gotta love the ignorance. To come to the point, I own 3 Squier Strats now...the two mentioned above both made in China and an '04 Standard which was made in Indonesia (along with my '96 MIM and somewhere around 20 other guitars) and to be honest, I've probably played well over 1000 guitars of various makes and models in my years as a guitar player...again for the price the Squiers are generally a truly outstanding value.

Of course this does beg the question...if you really think Squiers are "crap", then why would you hang out and post on a Squier forum to begin with? Nothing better to do with your time? Personally I don't care for Les Pauls...I think they are over-priced and very uncomfortable to play. As such you don't see me hanging out over at Gibson's forums. Just doesn't make sense.

Just my $.02 worth,

"Very nice Two Martin Man" The outdoor pics really make it so you can see allot of detail.Like that pic guard, and just the overall appearance of your MIM Squier.
Thanks for the pics,
Crazyhorse.

Thanks for the kind words. It plays and sounds as good as it looks. I read somewhere here on the forum that it's possible that the MIM Squiers (at least some of them) were equipped with ceramic pickups. I don't know if that's a fact, but mine sure sound good. I love the neck on this thing, too.

I have played my CV Squier for 3 or 4 months now, a real nice quality guitar. "Made in ...." doesn't mean anything to me anymore since playing this guitar. I bought this guitar instead of one of the many Fender Standard (MIM) Stratocasters I played that day, and I really wanted a Fender that day. Nice feel, good tone, excellant craftmanship, and a nice 3 tone burst. I have been playing too long to let a name/country of origin out weigh quality.

To the OP I do not know all that much about MIM Squiers, I have heard good things about them. I have seen Squiers made in USA, Mexico, Korea, China, and Indonesia.
