Hello, If anyone is familiar with the exact working of Mustang switches please let me know. The general fender manual on the fender site isn't very helpful as it is vague and not specific to the Mustang. I have a student who has one and she wants to know exactly what each position does. Bought new but didn't come w/owners manual... Many Thanks if anyone has info from use or from a more detailed manual if one exists! :)

They're actually a lot simpler than most people think.

Each pickup has its own switch.

The switches are 3 way sliders.

The middle position is off, and the outside positions are on.

So if both switches are in the middle both pickups are off, and you shouldn't hear anything through the amp.

If one switch is off and the other is in either on position you'll get that pickup by itself--it doesn't matter which way you slide the switch out of the middle position--it's the same.

The only time the on position matters is when both pickups are on.
If both switches are on and they are both closer to the neck or both closer to the bridge--then the pickups are in phase with each other.

If they are both to the inside or both to the outside--then the pickups are out of phase. So there are two ways to have the switches so the pickups are in phase & two ways to have them out of phase--again it doesn't matter which way.

So you can have these settings-
Both pickups off
Bridge pickup on & Neck pickup off
Bridge pickup off & Neck pickup on
Both pickups on in phase
Both pickups on out of phase.

I'm glad to help.

I'm not expert on everything Mustang, but what I do know about them I do like to share when people ask.

I love my Mustang--it's a lot of fun to play.
