One of my Strats is an early 90's MIM that's been tricked out a bit with a rosewood 7.25" radius fretboard, vintage tuners and callaham trem block with vintage style bridge.

Not sure what the body is made of, but it's very lightweight and sounds very good to my ears. 8)

I recently parted ways with a MIM Cray Strat. Nice guitar though!

I have a 2007 Fender Special Run, Ash bodied one, complete with the FSR sticker behind the headstock. OEM, it had Tex Mex pickups, a rosewood fingerboard, tortoise pickguard, white backplate, aged white (creme) knobs and pickup covers and a white tremolo arm tip.

What I did to it:

Replaced the backplate with a Fender tortoise one.

Replaced the white tremolo tip with a Fender aged white (creme) one.

Replaced the Tex Mexs with a DiMarzio Area 67/58/61 stacked HB combo.

Replaced the 5 way switch with a Fender Superswitch and the upper tone pot with a Fender megohm pot for blending. Now, I can get any pickup combination and the guitar still looks stock.

Rewired the two remaining pots for master volume and tone and replaced the cheesy OEM output jack with a Switchcraft one.

I Set it up with my own custom gauge of Ernie Ball Slinkys and slightly floated the tremolo block. Naturally, neck, action and intonation were all done in the process.

FWIW, the guitar weighs in at 7 pounds, 7 1/2 ounces.

All that's left to say is, read my signature.

Judging from what I read herein, you now have to have two divisions:
"stocks", and "mods".

Gets more interestng as time passes.

Speaking of Mexican Strats. Here's some info.

The necks on the MIM Strats haven't been made in the US for a couple of years now. Check out this 2006 photo-factory-tour of both the Ensenada and Corona factories. In the first set of photos from Ensenada, you will see the Mexican Neck Factory, where the necks are crafted from raw blanks.

http://picasaweb.google.com/meridianmus ... ryTour2006

You will also see pictures that show that the Mexican bodies can be glued up out of quite a few pieces of wood. Bodies intended for see-through finishes use veneers (applied and pre-contoured from the wood supplier).

It's true! The MIMs feel a lot more like 'traditional' Strats of many years gone by when compared to the MIA guitars of this current Fender dynasty. And from what I've deduced, the shape of the bodies and the necks, at least on mine any way, are from the 60s.

Believe it or not, I went into the store with every intention of buying a MIA Strat and came out with this one. It is now my #1 and like I've said in other posts, I've been playing Strats as my #1 guitar since 1968. And as you may imagine, I've owned many a "pedigreed" one too.

I have a 2006 Electron Blue MIM HSS with maple fretboard. I changed the white pickguard to a pearloid. Right now, I like it better than my '96 MIA Standard Strat.

Thanks highwayoneplayer and I'm glad that you started this thread. There are some very good guitars that have been MIM.

Proud owner of a 2007 arctic white with maple fb MIM strat here. I love it. It's real easy to play and it's light as a feather compared to my Epi LP Classic, which I also love. I never knew such sounds could come from a guitar. Set up was great right out of the box. Haven't had to do a single thing to it, except change strings.
