Absolutely God damn right! Don't ever get off of the boat.

Imagine if you went into the Navy instead of the Army, you could have rode around in one of those things, instead of having to jump out of helicopters, and walk through the jungle, carrying a bunch of gear. There was only a crew of 4, but check out the armament they had on them. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Patrol_Boat%2C_River I guess they didn't have a lot of armor or shielding on them, though.

If they were similar to the original PT Boat, they were made of plywood. Fiberglass hull on PBR's.

I imagine you had to have a balance there between armor and armament, plus the ability to have any sort of speed.

True, being able to get out of trouble, as fast as you got in to it is always a plus. Those little boats did have some heavy firepower. Browning 50's are an awesome cartridge. A 750 grain head, with an accurate range of about just over a mile.

Yeah, I'll bet they'll rip through pretty much anything, too. I'd certainly would hate to get hit by one.

.50's Were used on some of the better fighter planes, and I think on the B17 Flying Fortress's in WW ll. They were usually paired up with a .30 cal. on the tank turrets also.

Yeah, I've read about that. I suppose they were too big to use on the helicopters, is that why they had the M-60's instead? I mean the machine gun the gunner fired, not anything mounted. I suppose the helicopters that you used to extract and deploy troops didn't have anything but the gunner in the back, anyway, did they?

A side gunner. The M60 was a better choice for the Hueys. More ammo carried, and if the Huey went down, and they survived, the 23 pound M60 was a lot lighter to carry then a Browning .50.

Good point, that would be the issue of the .50 caliber. According to the Wikipedia article, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/M2_Browning it weighs almost 84 pounds, and almost 128 pounds with the tripod, not even counting what ever that ammo would weigh. I suppose if it were a lot lighter, you all would have been packing that along, I'm sure. I suppose because of that, you probably didn't have much interaction with that weapon, did you? Did they have them mounted at the bases, or was it just on tanks, boats, planes, and things like that?

They weren't carried in the field. I knew they were heavy, but not the 84 pounds. A magnificent weapon however.

Yeah, that would have been quite the tactical advantage if you could, but then again, so could the enemy. I certainly wouldn't want to be on the receiving end of one.

A 750 gr. bullet moving as fast as from a .50 Browning hitting anything in the field, other than an A1-Abrams Tank is devastating.
