I've recently purchased a 1966 P-bass in exceptional original condition, but I've always been annoyed at the ratty condition of the case. Although it's original, it's exceptionally stained inside, and most of the latches are broken or missing.

I just purchased a period correct case on eBay for way too much, but I figured it would be worth it overall considering the value of the bass. But now that I have it, I notice the imprint on the inside of the case lid is slightly off - and the thumb rest imprint was on the other side. If I ever decide to sell this bass, am I better off with the mint case, or the ratty one that the bass probably came in originally?

Thanks!

I'd include both cases with the sale. At the price point of a '66, it won't matter all that much dollar-wise, and it'll give the buyer the choice of which case to use and which to leave at home.

It sounds like the replacement case you have bought may come from 1975 or later, as this is when Fender moved the thumb rest to a location above the pick guard. Of course, if the case really is from circa 1966 (will either have no logo or more likely a "Fender" logo with no tail) then the guitar carried in it might have been a later model or the owner might have moved the thumb rest himself to be above the pick guard??
If the case is from 1975 it could have one of two logos :-
"Fender" with no tail & external brass rivets & a small R in a circle or
"Fender" with no tail & a small R in a circle plus "MADE IN USE" under the name - there will also be more padding inside
Whatever, the condition of the case needs to match the condition of the guitar. I would doubt that an excellent condition guitar would come in a poor condition case, & if I came across this I would need to be convinced that the case was original to the guitar, but the effect on the overall package price would probably not be great imo.
As has been suggested, sell both with the guitar & let the buyer decide perhaps?

I don't know what case you purchased as a replacement '66.
One tell tale sign of and original 60's case is that real leather was still being used on the case ends. The 70's cases went to a plastic leatherette material that is functional but not correct for a '66 Precision case.

The other annoying factor when buying Fender bass cases is that Jazz Bass cases are about 2 inches longer and if you get a Jazz Bass case for your P-bass, it will slide around inside the case. A correctly sized Precision case fits perfectly.
This error was often made by the shop originally selling the bass as well as many subsequent owners who would swap out cases for what was available. Just another thing to consider.

Thanks for the replies everyone. I ended up returning the case and keeping the original ratty one - at least I know for sure it's original to the bass. I made the mistake of listing the original case on eBay as soon as I received the mint condition one, but then realized too late I shouldn't have listed it. By the time I realized it was too late to cancel the auction. I begged the winner for forgiveness, but he gave me negative feedback anyway. I guess I deserved it! :(

Good decision. You should see some of the cases I have basses in....OMG.

I do want to mention that the thumb rest, grip bar, finger pull....etc, moved from the below the G to above the E in model year 1974, just a bit earlier than mentioned. But it was being thought about much earlier. In 1967 the Coronado bass had rests above the E and below the G. As most bass players were now playing with fingers rather than thumb (I have a picture of myself in 66 or 67 using fingers), it is odd it took so long to make the change permanent. And, of course, now they are considered a nuisance by many players, regardless of location, so dropped from all current models.

73-74 ushered in several changes, but I guess that would be another thread.

+1

As well, it was about then that the extra strap button mounted on the reverse side of the headstock was finally deleted.
