Hi Mark,

I just retired and got back into the bass scene after a 30 year absence and it does feel good. Some of the old techniques are coming back to me and I used this site to get back into the basics.

Also, I use a VOX Amplug headphone amplifier which plugs directly into your bass and allows you to plug in a MP3 / CD player and play along with the tunes. A great device. All the best.

Mark,

I am so there with you! I am 42 and have never played an instrument or sang in my life. Watched the bassist in our Sunday school band and thought, "I bet I could do that too!"

Well I sort of can, at least I am getting better. Two DVDs that I have found useful are "Tony Saunders Beginning Bass" and the Gerald Vasser DVD that came with my Ibanez starter kit. Also ActiveBass.com and Cyberfretbass.com are great.

Also, you can find hit youtube and search for "bass covers" to most popular songs as well as "bass lessons" for free lessons and instructions.

I am taking lessons now and it does help some but there is a lot you can do on your own as well.

Six months in, I am deciding which Fender I want for Christmas! And there are some good basses that start at $400-500.

Best of luck!

Jeff

I notice from another thread that you have been eye-balling the 70s Jazz and the Geddy Lee. I'm not a fan of block inlays, but I have tried out both before and they are nice basses.
In the price range that you stated here for a new bass would be the "Standard" basses, also known as MIM or Made In Mexico. Nothing wrong with them at all, people just think that since it is at the bottom of Fender's basses that it is junky. As with any mass produced bass, you will get exceptional ones and you will get lousy ones. You just gotta find the right one. With the holidays coming up and negotiating on the price, you could get one for the low $300's. Also take a look at the Squier Vintage Modified basses. Those have gotten alot of positive reviews. Those run less than $300 new.
I got my Highway One P-bass for $460 brand new from GC last november, thanks to a 20% off coupon I had. It was put on sale for $699 right before Thanksgiving and I used that coupon to get it lower.
Also check out the used market, either from your local craigslist or a bass specific forum. Lots of great deals are always popping up and you can find a great quality used bass for around $500.
IMO I would go out to your local music store and try several different Fender basses, and not even worry about the price. You gotta find the bass that will feel right in your hand, not "settle" for a bass because of price restraints. Most of the Fender basses at GC or SA will top out price-wise at around $1500, and you can haggle that down from there. I always say to the salesman that even though they are selling a new bass, it is used now because of everyone playing around with them and knocking them around. Also learn about the serial number dating, I saw a "new" bass being sold for regular price but it was an '05.
Hope any of this can help you out.

Zod,

Yep but every Fender I play, I love! Also living in Dallas and travelling all over DFW for my job, I know where every GuitarCenter is and usually end up at one at least a couple of days a week. Today I messed with an Aerodyne and a Jaguar and really liked them both too. That Transparent Crimson Aerodyne P body would sure look good in my Boomer Sooner game room. I think the Jaguar is really cool with a great neck and the switches really change the sound dramatically but I am a bit concerned about a guitar that requires some modification (going only by what others on these forums have said). I'm mechanically challenged. Also grabbed a Squire Classic Vibe PBass today for the first time. Nice little bass and cool looking but not really an upgrade over my Ibanez IMHO and uncomfortable thumb rest to me.

 WARNING!!!! BLASPHEMY COMING!!!!!
Best bass I picked up today easily was...........a Gibson TBird IV, the real deal ($1949). WOW. What a bass guitar that thing is and with a great neck.! Not very appealing to look at but boy did my bass cover rift of, "Since You Been Gone" sound like Roger Glover! I should have grabbed a strap, as I usually stand, just to see how it felt slung. A young dude grabbed it after me and was playing/slapping the heck out of it, just tearing it up. Real comfortable to rest my thumb on the PU. Maybe it was a first time thing? Too much $$$ anyway but....

One of the funnest things I have ever done is shop for my next bass! Reminds me of when I was shopping for my other hobby, a new road bike.

I have found your point about the lower end Fenders not all being the same to be right on. Specifically the 70s J Basses seem to have a lot of variance to me. Some good $400-500 Ibanez and Schecter's at GC tho.

I'll keep you guys posted and I really have learned a lot from reading the posts here. Thanks to you all!

Hi! I am also a beginner bass player. My husband and father-in-law play guitar and they have played for many people, mainly family and friends. They have recorded a few CDs and have also been played on a local radio station. My husband bought me an electric precision bass last week for our anniversary. They have taught me to play Johnny Cash's Folsom Prison Blues. So far, that's the only thing I can play. I would also like any information or sites to help me. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!
