Been playing with regular medium gauge D'addario XLs for years. Been happy with them, but I played a bass a while back with flatwounds on it. I liked the feel of it, but did not try it through an amp. Can you guys tell me the benefits/minuses of them versus standard wound strings? My bass does allow me to string through the body.

Thanks!

Thanks to advice and recommendations from members here, I went with the Fender 9050L in the same gauge 45-100. Hope the strings work well for you :) .

I've been curious about those. Typically, I use Rotosound flats, but I might try something new to see how they are. I do use Ernie Ball Slinkys on my Tele when I play guitar and I like those strings, so the brand is good with me.

The truly interesting thing about the EB Slinky Cobalt flats is that they are a very light gauge cobalt roundwound string with a flat cobalt ribbon wrap on top. Just like a nylon wrap only with iron & cobalt alloy.

Not all flatwounds are wound like that. Many are, but some aren't. D'Addario Chromes; Fender Flats, and GHS Precision Flats are stainless steel ribbon wrapped over a roundwound string. The core thickness and wrap ratio makes all the difference.

GHS have heavier hex cores and therefore more moving mass when plucked which in turn generates a stronger magnetic signal for the pickup to pick up. This results in a stronger attack with more punch which is why I use flatwounds in the first place, and GHS Precision flats specifically.

So far, they are really great. Just put them on last night, and I was surprised how good they already felt after an initial tune-up. Don't seem as bright as a new set of strings usually do, but not dull at all. Will be interested to see what they sound like after a couple of weeks on the bass.

Flats take a month or two to settle in, and really come into their own at six months to a year. What interests me is what the Cobalt Flat Slinkys sound like then. If they sound like a dead round, then forget it.

I think I've had the flats on my Schecter Jazz for close to two years (I did put them on when I got the bass) and the ones on my Squier Jazz have only been on a month, so they're not totally ripe yet.

Okay, played during rehearsal last night with the other instruments. Had amazing tone, and no reduction in attack, thump, etc. Not as bright and "twangy" as a new set of round wounds, which I prefer. I usually play with my tone control rolled most of the way off, but played the entire night with it in about the mid position. I know some of the brightness will diminish as they settle in, but I love the fact that they already sound great... Plus, the feel was outstanding! So smooth, and very minimal fret noise.
