This is very cool! 8) Written and recorded by my friend at GHS, Jon Moody for Seymour Duncan. Take a read and have a listen. :)

That was a nice introduction to someone like me who is new to flatwounds and needed, advice on what was out there and a breakdown on each set and what they offered. I liked the picked sound demo & his sound from his Aria P copy sounded good as well. Nice to see the Fender 9050L set mentioned in the review 8) .

That's right, Shawn. What I like is these are all the top mainstream competitors for the flatwound market. D'Addario Chromes are by far the most popular. I like the way Jon put the Chromes back-to-back with Fender Flats (wound to Fender's spec's by D'Addario and not simply re-packed Chromes) you can definitely hear the difference between each set. I like GHS Precision Flats best and that is what I have on my Precision, but if that weren't the case, I would be playing Fender Flats for sure. To my ears they are the two best sounding sets across the board.

It's a real shame that the Fender bass forums are so dead. :(

I thought that the Fender forums would have been busier :o . Though I do like the friendliness of members here :).

You'd never know it now, but it used to be fun around here. The BIG thing was we all loved Fender basses and amps and we cared about the well being of F.M.I.C.

Cool article. 8) That's interesting to note that I'm not the only person that noticed the Rotosounds had a little stiffness to them, especially when I had them on my Squier Jazz. They're not bad at all in a lighter gauge, though. I had swapped them out for those on the Squier and also tweaked the action, since that was too high as well. It's really nice now, so now I'm more keen on playing it frequently. Sometimes a bass needs a little work to get it going to where you want it.

I am really thinking about trying out those new Ernie Ball Slinky flats the next time I change strings. It's too bad he didn't try those out in his list there. I'm curious to see how those would have been described. I do like the Ernie Ball strings on my Telecaster, but guitar isn't something I'm all that fussy about like bass, so it's not a valid comparison.

Well, I've tried even posting in the Squier section again, but there was the sounds of crickets and tumbleweeds blowing through there. :P Yeah, it's certainly quieter around here than it was back in 2012/2013. I've noticed a few people haven't been around in a long time, unless I'm not looking in the right place. Whatever happened to modwiz, for example? I use to see him all of the time when we had the original Rumble threads going when I was CPL. I guess like anything else on the internet, things come and go.

The problem with the Ernie Ball Slinky Cobalt Flats was availability. There have been some quality control issues with string breakage and also with strings simply unwinding as you instal them. So that's not good.

Like Thomastik-Infeld Jazz Flats, the Cobalt flats are their own kind of tone animal with the cobalts doing their best to impersonate a roundwound string. I am tempted to try them on my Jazz.

That's good to know about that. Hopefully, there won't be any more QC issues. I guess it's all a wait and see on how they pan out. The last time I looked, Bass Strings Online had them in stock, so maybe I might jump on that soon. I'm about due for a string change, anyhow.

I was using D'Addario Flatwounds for a while before I went to the D'Addario Nylons. If I were going to go back to Flats, I string with the Chrome Flatwounds again.

I might have used D'Addario flats a long time ago. I've tried GHS and I use to like the light gauge Fender flats that I tried probably 20 years ago or so. I remember actually buying a set in a flea market down in Florida. That was back when you could find all kinds of crap at those. Who knows now?

I think I have played every type of flat made, from machine wound Black Diamond's to hand wound LaBella's - and I still don't know which one I like best.

Right now most of my basses are strung with Chromes, I have a couple with Fender's and a couple with LaBella's. I have narrowed it down to those three for my personal preference.

Chromes and Fenders are probably pretty neck and neck as far as being a cost effective string without giving anything up. Flip a coin on any given day as to which one I like better.

LaBella's, especially the 1954's, are a favorite, but they are so strong you have to be careful where you use them. A forum member warned me off them by siting personal experiences of them warping necks, even breaking them - but they sure do sound nice. I run a set on my Mustang. My thought it the shorter neck should handle the pressure better, and they really give that bass some bottom. Blindfolded, you would likely not guess it was a Mustang.

The only thing I can say for sure is "I like flats". I only have one bass left with rounds, a FCS60JRI. That bass has ridiculous growl. No way I take those off until they die.

I used 9050ML on my 3 Fender basses the past 4-5 years, I love the sound and feel of them. But they weren't always the best choice for what our band plays. I recently learned of Ken Smith Compression-Wound strings and they have become another favorite, smoother than typical rounds but with a bit more zing than flats.
