I know what you're saying. Prices are crazy on some strings. My ETB92 Nylons aren't cheap, but they're on the bass for a long time. I'm zoned in on my Jazz, and Precision. I just have to decide which one to play each time. Both are my favorites to play anymore

That's the thing with bass strings. It's not like you have to change them as often, say a guitar, unless of course, you're John Entwistle. :P

That was shall we say, excentric? At best, a bit "Out Of Focus".

It's nice to be playing a Precision that I like everything about it. Including the strings. I'm not thinking about changing the PG on this PJ Precision either. The color combination on it, looks ok to me. Are you going to keep your PG as is on your PJ Precision?Image

I guess so. I don't even know if they even make a pickguard for my bass or not. I haven't looked around yet. Do they have them for your bass?

I'm pretty much like you, where I haven't looked around any. I like the way mine is looking, so I'm just playing as is.

Yeah, like the old saying goes, if it ain't broke, don't fix it. That's probably why I've been reluctant to even change out the strings, since everything is playing so well, I don't want to mess with the mojo, as it were.

I know eventually I'll have to change out the strings, because rounds don't really age as well as flats do, or at least to me they don't. I think if you're using rounds, you'll want to have that attack to them, or I guess piano tone, depending on how your amp is set. Speaking of that, I've never even plugged this bass (or the violin hollow-body, for that matter) into my Orange stack. I've only been using the Fender in the office since I've had those basses. I know I'm going to be using the Orange pretty soon, so I imagine I'm going to have to do some knob tweaking on it. I had the treble all of the way up and the tweeter set at a high frequency, because I was using the Schecter with flats on it. I have a feeling that the Precision, with the rounds, is going to be too snappy with the top end set like that.

I probably would've run the new basses through Orange setup first. Mainly since it's a bit of rare set up with the 18".

I would have, but we haven't been utilizing the rehearsal room at all, just have everything set up downstairs in the office, where I have the Fender. I suppose I could have just gone up there and plugged into it by myself, but I just haven't taken the time to even mess with it. There was a bunch things going on besides recording and all of that. At least I've tried to take the time each day to play, even if it's just picking up the bass without plugging it in, which I've done a lot, as well. That's going to change with gigs coming up and all of that, so the Orange will once again see action.

That Orange must be a real kicker!

Yeah, it is. I'm really looking forward to really using that amp. I've never really got to put it through it's paces with the full stack, so that's something I am curious about, even though if I had it to do all over again, I would have gotten at least one 15" cab.

An 18" would probably be a real knock down kick azz! My playing here at home would be a waste though with an 18". Sometimes I almost think the 15" is a bit more than I need. The only other cab I'd prefer over my 115 Neo, is the Ampeg SVT-212AV, that I'm going to acquire in a couple of days. I was able to play the two cabs, side by side today through a Bassman 500. The Ampeg SVT-212AV is a real kicker punching out 500 watts, @ 4 ohms. It's not only doing well with the 2X12's, but it's using the full power output of 500 watts, with a hundred to spare. The Ampeg dresses out at 600 watts.

That sounds like a nice sounding cab. You're happier with the 2 x 12"s instead of the 15" speaker?

By the way, we're hooking up with a guitar player, that my girlfriend knows in Boston, that has a rehearsal room full of crap, and he has an old Kustom 3 x 15" bass stack there, which I'm not going to use the head, but I'm going to bring my Orange head (I did get a Speakon to 1/4" speaker cable a long time ago so I could do this, if I needed to use an older cab elsewhere, and it wasn't practical or able to bring my own cabs) and run it through that cab. It kind of sucks that I won't be able to try out my cabs until I use them for a gig, but I guess I'll be using some 15"s. I can deal with that. It's just it would be difficult to hall those cabs up and down stairs somewhere in Boston, then try to squeeze them in some small space that's packed full of gear.

I still want to use my own head, though. I'll feel more comfortable with that, so I'd hate to be responsible of using someone's else's amp and the thing decides to burn out, or some other electronic failure, and the fact it's part of my sound. Obviously, I have to be careful running a 1000 watt head through some old Kustom cab, that I don't even know if it has the original speakers in it (if so, they're at least 50 years old, or pushing it, depending on the year of that thing,) but I doubt they can handle that much power. Then again, it's not like I'd even dime the thing to begin with, so I shouldn't worry too much.

A white pearloid pickguard looks pretty cool with both Seafoam and Surf Green finishes. It's purely a question of taste.
