One thing nice about it, you're in no hurry to have to change them out. I can see your point about the flats on a violin, viola, bass. The EKO, "Electric Lady" had Nylons on, over the standard rounds that came on it. Flats, or Nylons sounded good on a Hofner as well. From the factory, the Hofner had Flats onboard.

I think another reason that I haven't totally decided yet is the fact I do have flats on the Jazz and the violin bass, and this does add an extra difference in the sound which I don't have with those two basses, sans all of the other obvious ones from them being different instruments to begin with.

Why does bass strings seem like some sort of commitment to even begin with? I guess is because they're too expensive to constantly change out and try different sets, and the fact you pretty much have to leave them on for a long time to get the best out of them (i.e. "break in.") I read that when John played shows with the Who, he actually had the strings changed out after every show. I don't know if I'd be like that, even if I could afford to. I think the minimum would be a couple of weeks to a month, and that would be heavy playing use, and rounds. Flats take a hell of a lot longer than that, and they actually sound better to me when they start to go a bit.

That was a pretty radical move to change strings like he did. I could almost see it with 6 stringers, but a bass not that much.

Yeah, no wonder he went in debt and they had to reunite in the 80's so he could make money to get out of it. :P That was one dude who lived up to being a rock star. I wonder if they kept the strings or just threw them out?

Good question.

You'll probably find them on eBay for $500, because the Ox used them for a couple of hours. :P

To me they're not worth it.

I know, but that's how that usually goes. Collectors will buy them, too.

Yeah,........ that's true. I don't care who's bass they were on, they're just used bass strings.

All joking aside, I wonder if that was ever the case with those? I suppose you'd have to have some way to verify that, and a collector that is willing to spend that kind of money. Then again, he went through so many of them, like guitar picks, they probably didn't have that kind of value. It's not like it's hand written lyrics or a particular instrument.

True, they were just used bass strings. I never understood it in the first place. Just because the man could play a bass, didn't know he knew the ins, and outs of basses.

I sold the PJ Precision.
NOTTTTT!!! I did play it today, and like I've said earlier, I do like it better than the Am. Std. PJ I had. Such a nice playing Bass. I'm loving the Sea Foam Pearl finish on it also. I couldn't have selected a better Precision for myself. You must feel the same way with your PJ Precision as well.

Oh yeah, my Precision has been quite the go to bass for me. I've been putting the most time in on it, but I'm still debating about the strings.

Speaking of strings, I was looking at different brand sites earlier today. There's quite a few, some you might not even see typically in a Guitar Center, or the like, but at a specialty site, like Bass Strings Online, or I found another called Bass Strings Only. I have a half arsed urge to try something like that and see what happens. There's a brand called Black Diamond, and SIT, which I have heard of, because Jack Bruce used them and endorsed them. Or maybe I'll get some off-brand Chinese made ones that you can get for $9 and see if they turn my fingers green. :P They have a bunch of crap like that on Amazon.com or the likes.

The Black Diamond is suppose to be a top bass string. About the only thing I say about strings anymore is, I like the strings I use. D'Addario strings seem to be a top brand of strings as well.
I'm to the point with my two basses, I love both of them, and it's a hmmm, which should I play? I'm not complaining about it either. I knew how much I liked the USA GL Jazz when I replace that one, but the PJ Precision has just totally blown me away on the entire setup on it. A fantastic Precision, with a Jazz neck of course. The Maple Fretboards on both, are also what I prefer. Image

I've noticed some strings are a lot more expensive than others. So much so, I don't even know if they'd be worth it. Like those Pyramids go for over $100 a set, which is pretty much a third of what I even paid for my Precision and what I paid for my violin hollow-body bass. I know they have their history and are probably (I'd hope) amazing strings, but even if I could afford it, could I justify the expense? I suppose if I had some $2000 Hofner or a Rickenbacker, then it would make more sense.

Even though I might typically play on one bass, lately the Precision, I'll sometimes start off with the hollow-body bass and switch over. I've noticed that between those basses, I'll approach them differently. I mean I'll play something different than I would the other, but then I'll see what I come up with translates well with the other instrument. Sometimes it works well, and other times it doesn't. There is a difference in sounds and feel, even though technically it's all 4 string basses.
