Yeah, I wound up getting that instead of a Jazz. They had a deal on them at American Musical Supply that I couldn't pass up, besides I already do have a Squier Jazz.

That looks sweet Paul. Best of playing with it. PJ's are nice. Image

Thanks. 8) I have to say this bass seems to tailor made for me, if that makes sense. I took to it right away, without any sort of adjusting to do. It's certainly not as heavy or as wide of a neck as the Schecter Diamond Jazz, plus it sounds like a P Bass, because well, it is one, with the benefit of a Jazz pickup for the bridge, which I've done well with, as far as pickup configurations go.

You know, I wasn't originally planning on getting this bass, since I did want a Jazz in Olympic White, like I showed you, but AMS does this weird thing that whenever I'm thinking about getting a new piece of gear, something will come out of the blue with a deal that I can't pass up (usually, that means something they put on clearance, but hey, I've saved at least $1000 on my equipment with this,) and I go for it. They knocked $50 off of the price, and offer a 5 month payment plan of $50 each installment. You know, play then play sort of thing. So, I don't have a white bass, but it does match the Jazz and the Tele, so that's kind of cool from that aspect of it. I should take a group pic of the three Sunburst Squiers. That might look cool.

Sometimes it works out better when there's a change in plans. I've had that happen a lot. Ya' never know when an Olympic White may pop up for you.
Pics, more pics. I like Sunburst myself.

You know, the more I thought about it, it just made more sense to go with the P Bass, sans the price drop (which is a nice bonus,) because I already had the Jazz, it would just have been the same one, but a different color, and a different bridge, since I swapped that out for a Leo Quan B.A. II. I don't think I'll need to mess with the bridge on this one, though. It seems to be pretty decent, and set up nicely. You know, don't fix what isn't broke and all of that. I did have some GAS for a P Bass off and on, anyway. :P

The Bridge on your Precision looks pretty beefy. I wouldn't mess with changing out anything on it, other than strings, maybe. Unless you're really a nut for Jazzes, it makes sense to not get heavy in them. It took me awhile to realize I do my best playing with Jazzes.

Even though I think the Precision will probably be the bass I'll use the most (I kind of have to, because the Jazz has a short in it that would be problematic, because I can't have the bass cut out in the middle of a song, performing or recording, but it's OK for casual practice,) I do like them both, and the hollow-body, too. The great thing about them is the different options you have for different sounds. They do sound totally different from each other, which can be cool for different songs. I just have to see what works the best for whatever I'm doing.

It's good you have more options to work with now. I can see where the PJ would be a great go to bass.

I've used that pickup combination quite a bit, now that I think about it. The Fender Precision Bass Lyte (which even though is technically classified as a Precision, it really doesn't feel like one, at all, because of the small body, active electronics, and the Jazz neck on it,) the Ibanez CT Series, and the Peavey Zodiac Bass all have that. It's funny, even though these basses have that pickup, they are a lot different, but that's probably because of the bodies of them, and other features. This Squier is the closest I've had to an authentic P Bass sound, since I had an actually P Bass, if that makes any sense. Maybe there's a certain mojo to it. It's the same with the Jazz. The Schecter Diamond J, although an excellent bass, wouldn't be mistaken for a Fender by it's tonality, and certainly it's feel. At least the Squier can, because it is a Fender, albeit with a different name, and obviously a few things that you won't get, because you're not paying for them. I'm pretty sure you'll notice, to some degree, a side by side comparison to your Jazz (I would certainly hope so, otherwise you'd be getting ripped off over a name and place of manufacture,) but you could probably swap out a lot of the part into it with the same ones in yours, and it would certainly give it a good run for it's money, at least tonally, I think.

That's one thing about a Fender made bass, under whatever it's Series Name, it still has Fender components, so it should have a similar sound to it. The electronics should have the Fender base to them all.

That's true. They just might happen to be made in different countries, that's probably all. Speaking of which, I'm curious who in Indonesia is manufacturing the Squiers. I know a lot of different brands are being made there these days, like Ibanez, for one example. It could be someone like Cort, or Samick, which did a lot of manufacturing for companies back in the day (originally in South Korea, but I'm pretty positive they have factories in Indonesia, now.)

That is still who manufactures a lot of the Squier product for the U.S. Cort and Samick have been producing better and better quality stuff as time moves forward. The CV and VM lines are great players in my opinion.

I agree with the CV and VM being great players, or at least I can vouch for the VM series, since I have 3 different models. I'm bummed out that they discontinued a lot of the line, especially the basses, but I guess they had their reasons.

PaulLF, what models do you own? And what specifically do you like about each? Thanks for sharing.

Well, I have the Vintage Modified Precision PJ Bass, a Vintage Modified Jazz Bass (which I also modified by putting on a Leo Quan Bad $@! II bridge on it,) and a Vintage Modified Telecaster Custom, which has the humbucker for the bridge pickup. I couldn't really afford the Fender models of each of these, but I feel they are an excellent representation of those models. They do a good job, I think.

For some reason, the Squier line appeals to me more that the MIM Fender Standard series. I haven't found any justification to spend the extra $200, or whatever they are just to have the name on the head stock. Maybe the ones that are in the $800-$900 range are different, but then again, I could buy two Squiers for that, plus you can always mod something, like I did with the Jazz. I actually bought that bridge for a Peavey bass I have, but it didn't really work out for it, so I went ahead and swapped it for the Squier. It sounds really good on it, so that worked out well. I don't think I even need to do that for the Precision. It's set up nicely and sounds really good, so I'm not going to mess with that. If it ain't broke, like the saying goes.
