Of course, The Who had a wall of them back in the day.

When Grand Funk Railroad was on their first tour, Hiwatt was the amp they used.

I take it that's before the West amplifiers then?

This was the first road tour they did with the "On Time" album.

Speaking of Sound City, there's a site about them that has some info about them. http://www.soundcitysite.com/

Thanks for this Paul :D just been looking through the site, and my old 120 brought back some happy memories :D . Still looks heavy in the pictures and bigger than I remembered  .

You ever see those amps still around anywhere?

I have a bunch of links like that with those old amps like that and other ones. Watkins/WEM, Selmer, Orange, etc. That, and guitar related ones.

Only when I go to some guitar shows. Slight edit just watched some YT videos on the SC120 I'd forgot how it sounded, still looks a big head though I forgot how much it weighed.

I know what you mean and I'm 5 years younger than you. Hell, I probably wasn't that keen to haul stuff like that when I was in my 20's. :P

Oh yeah, especially as heavy as the amps were back then. Sounded good, though. I can say I'm glad I never had to move that Sonic cab that I played through a few time that had the 2x18"s and 2x10"s. That thing was a beast, but you could probably blow out the windows with it. :P You ever play a bass amp, that when cranked, you feel hit you in the chest? That could do that. It was powered by a 400 watt GK 800RB head, too. That amp was pretty loud.

The daft thing was back in 1988 when I was 21 I picked up the, Carlsbro 1x18 cab for £15 & it just fitted in my ex-girlfriends car  . I'm sure I got the Sound City in a swap for a HH Valve sound head, no wonder he did the bloody swap  .

How were those H&H amps? I know that Daniel Ash from Bauhaus/Love & Rockets used them for years with a Marshall cab and I have a link to a site that features them. I know that they are still around, too. They make PA stuff and some multi purpose amps. I think they might have guitar and bass specific amps, too.

I had the 100w Valve sound head & matching 2x15 cab, the heads used to have a green back light to them very Trace Elliot looking. I would be surprised if they were still going though, looked good on stage though in low light.

I imagine they would be. Daniel Ash has used his for almost 40 years, unless he happened to replace them with another ones like it. I'm sure there was probably maintenance here and there from touring for so long with them.

I have been trying to remember all the amps I've had over the last 29 years  .

I remember all of mine, but I didn't have a lot that I went through, though.

In chronological order:

1. Fender Sidekick 30 (my first amp I got when I bought my first bass)

2. Ampeg B-115 (some 1970's solid state combo that was 120 watts that I should have never bought because it wasn't powerful enough to keep up with my friend, who played guitar and got me into playing bass.)

3. Roland DAC-15 (15 watt combo that I used as a practice amp. It sounded pretty good, actually.)

4. Laney 100 watt bass head (I don't know the model number and was a stupid impulse buy because I was still a total beginner with only a year experience. No competition against my friend's Peavey Special 130 combo. I did run it with the Ampeg and some homemade 2x15" cab that my friend built.)

5. Peavey Databass (My first "real" amp. 450 watt combo with a 15" Black Widow speaker. Loud as hell and I used it for many years. I regret getting rid of it. I could definitely keep up with anybody, including a 130 watt guitar amp.)

6. Peavey Mark IV half stack (Peavey Mark IV head and 15" cab with Black Widow that I got a good deal on and used as a secondary amp. Sometimes, I used it with the Databass for a stereo rig. Yes, I was loud.)

7. Fender Bass300C BXR (300 watt combo amp that I got because I liked the tone over the Databass. I should have stuck with the Databass, because it wound up being not powerful enough.)

8. Ampeg SVT3 Pro (450 watt head that I ran with a Carvin 15" cab and Crate 2x10" cab. Replaced the Fender, but I still missed the Databass in the long run.)

9. Peavey Basic 60 (50 watt combo that my girlfriend had that I use for practice. It's sitting in my office right next to me.)

10. Fender Rumble 350 combo (I got this amp in 2012 and it's the reason I'm even been on the forum all these years. I liked it so much that I joined here to talk about it. Also, I used it back in January for a radio show that was video taped. It's a good amp and loud, too.)

11. Orange Terror Bass 1000 (The beast. 1000 watts with two tube preamp and I'm running it through a Celestion 18" speaker in a Carvin cab and a 2x10" Carvin cab for some high end. I replaced the 18" with the Celestion, because I needed an 8 ohm cab to use the 2x10" cab together. It was originally 4 ohms. I'd like to replace the 10"s with Celestions eventually, as well. I haven't gigged with it yet, but I know this amp is quite loud. I've yet to even fully crank it.)
