I just bought a 1982 p bass special walnut. It has a great tone, but it's humming. It's not bad when I am in passive but when I switch to active the humming is quite loud. I really don't want to mess with this bass since I believe it is rare, but what could be the problem? Would it be a shielding issue? Bad wire? Any info is appreciated.

Sure sounds like a grounding issue to me. You need a competent electronics technician to trace it down and rectify the problem.

Taking your bass to a competent technician is the safest way to go, but if you are handy with tools and a volt/ohm meter, you may be able to diagnose the problem yourself.

Carefully disassemble the bass and check for any obvious loose wires under the pickguard.
follow the rec. site schematic and test for continuity throughout the circuit.

Loosen the pots and check for a good ground connection for the circuit. Sometimes the only real contact to ground is via a potentiometer mount or star washer. It may also use a ground wire to the bridge. Through the years (30+) this connection may have degraded due to corrosion or a loosening of the pot.

Try tightening your pot mounts and reassembling the bass. You may solve your own problem.

Good Luck.
