It's coming up on eight years since I discovered The Fender Forums, back then the Jazz Bass Forum dominated the posts, but after a couple years the Precision Forum took the lead and never looked back.

Giving credit where credit is due, there are a LOT of knowledgeable Precision owners that made it what it is, with great advice, pictures and encouragement.

There were good time and bad times with trolls, googlebots and assorted other distractions. there were good times and friendships born out of a mutual love of Fender bass guitars.

I write this to say, it's sad that the Fender Forums have deteriorated as bad as they have. It's not just here, it's everywhere. So many people no longer frequent and a scant few do their best to try and keep things interesting.

I'm calling out all those who have left, I know you still drop by, and encourage everybody here, to get more involved, even if it's just posting pictures of our gear.

I'll start! Let the good time roll!

From what I can tell (I know... tiny sample size), many web-based forums are dying, and not just in the music world. With a few obvious exceptions (TB being the most-obvious one) I think everything's gone to social media. I think Web forums are today what the Usenet was maybe 10 years ago: shrunk to an almost invisible radar blip. The progression: Usenet -> Web forums -> social media -> [next_time_waster].

I liked the Usenet. You could really rip into someone who desperately deserved it. If someone asked a question that was already answered in some opaquely-authored (by a smelly old guy with a beard and an open can of Beefaroni next to him) five-year-old FAQ hiding in some obscure place on some obscure server, the normal response would be, "What are ya, stupid or somethin'?!?" It was great!

But anyway, nice collection you got there. No love here for JBs, but that PB on the left looks fantastic with the tort pg. And the body wood is perfect for that clear finish. Would've been a capital crime to paint it. Bet it sounds great! Give us some history on that bad boy, eh?

That would be "Brownie", a distant cousin of Eric Clapton's Strat. He is a 2007 MIM FSR. Yes he's as pretty as he looks, the neck isth e best of all I own, just ahead of my 87 Jazz Bass, which is the slimmest neck i've ever played.

The fit and finish are is perfect. I'm old school, so covers and thumb rest were necessary.I wasn't happy with the original pickups so after agonizing for a month or so, i decided on Seymour Duncan SPB-3's. they're super quiet and have all the power I could ask for.

There, you have it!

Ya know if you haven't gotten anything new or vintage to 'show 'n' tell' about, there's not much else. Two basses I am intensely interested in (Dimension, and Jaguar) aren't available lefty. Good thing I guess as no way could I afford to buy one let alone both.

No one's buying new amps. Affprod and King o' Pain both got Super Bassman rigs, but that's awhile back. I'd love to have a new V3 Rumble 500 head, but $400 is out of my reach.

It's funny when I only had my MIK Squier Precision & found this site, I used to look at the basses posted and think who knows maybe one day. And then just before I knew I was getting a genuine American Fender Precision and a Fender Rumble 200, I asked some questions here & was given good advice and made to feel welcome. There are a lot of knowledgeable and friendly people here, & this forum is a credit to them :D .
So now I visit here everyday just to check for new posts see who's on, & check the Bass amp forum here as well. And without triaxe/mr.nylon's head swelling it was looking at his bass, that made me decide what colour my Precision had to be.

You're the last person that has bought anything new. Good Show! :)
The best thing about the Fender Forums is the absence of anti-Fender hatred that is so very prevalent at other forums. Also the amount of first hand Fender expertise that can be found here just for the asking is unrivaled. 8)

Being a retired engineer (UNIX, Oracle databases, and audio), I'd be the first one to hate on a Fender on a couple of issues -- PBs included. (Don't even get me started on JBs.) But guess what: They're tough, they sound great once you get them into a mix, the pickups are adjustable for identical string output, they're roadworthy, they balance reasonably well, every capable sound person breathes a sigh of relief when you show up with one because he already knows how to mix them, even the Mexican ones do a great job dead stock, they look good on stage, they're quiet, they age well, the resale value is at least decent and sometimes very good, and imo the playability is right up there with anything else with an unbound neck, with the 7" radius neck a possible exception (again imo).

I own three PBs, and frankly, I look at other basses now, even the $5K ones, and I think, "Uh... would someone tell me exactly what that thing's reason is to exist?"

Well, I've bought new gear not that long ago (almost a year, probably,) but it wasn't anything Fender related. I've already had the Rumble 350 combo for around 3 1/2 years and that's really when I became active with this forum when I got that. The last thing I bought Fender related was a Squier Vintage Modified Jazz Bass, after I got a Squier Tele Custom.

I never talked about the Jazz too much because I was pissed off about that Squier Bass VI that took a couple of months to get on back order and it had a screwed up neck that I got right afterwards. I did get over that, but man that was annoying. I've actually taken quite a liking to the Squier Jazz recently, again. It has good bones, but it does need some minor work. It has some slight fret burrs that need filing and maybe a little action tweaking. I'm going to put lighter gauge strings on it, so that should help.

I spent Derby Day volunteering my services as a bartender for charity. Mint Juleps from scratch. Red Racers, just add vodka....disgustingly sweet to my taste.

So, after the race, and making a million drinks, or so it seemed, I went home, put my clothes in the wash, tried to wipe simple syrup off my boat shoes, and then checked to see where my two horses came in.

I am a loser.

Your post reminded me of a great old song by the Clovers from 1952 that got played a lot on juke boxes at shag dance joints in the southeast when I was growing up and still does get played around here when shag dance clubs have dances. Unfortunately the shaggers are aging out, moving away or dying off. The song was written initially from a humorous angle since a mint julep traditionally was a cocktail primarily consumed by ladies of the Caucasian landed gentry, and never by an African American male. So the idea of a black man getting drunk on mint juleps in 1952 was sort of funny. (It was a different time.) This record was also one of the first non-country hit songs about drinking alcohol in general to get a lot of radio play. The song "Drinkin' Wine Spo-Dee-O-Dee" by Stick McGhee preceded it by a few years as strictly a blues record and while a regional hit it didn't sell anywhere near as many records as the Clovers did. The Clovers hit has since been covered by both male and female vocalists numerous times which is not unusual, but what is unusual is the Clovers hit also had a instrumental version recorded by Buddy Morrow that became a hit right at the tail end of the big band era. The original Clovers version was a huge seller in the early days of Atlantic Records and was a sea change for the Clovers as they had primarily been recording love ballads prior to this song. (Atlantic also gave Stick McGhee a second chance with his "Drinkin' Wine" song and his Atlantic Records remake became the most memorable of the two versions.)

Awesome.....there were a few people there that were probably saying "One Mint Julep was the cause of it all" the next morning.

Found the album on Amazon.
