Just wondering,
Why do people block out the serial numbers on their instruments when they post photos of them?

It is so that another person cannot claim the instrument as one that was stolen from them and therefore make life difficult for the owner.

I think the burn is from a cord or a plastic part that interacted with the lacquer finish. I have a 70's Mustang bass that has an entire coil cord impression in the finish because the bass was stored with one in contact with its finish for too long a time.
Rubber and some types of plastic interact with the finishes on older Fender basses.
This bass appears to have had that happen to it.
