Right, so I'm trying to get flat wound strings for my '51 reissue, which, history has indicated, needs super long scale strings (as it has through body strings). And it seems really difficult to find super long scale flat wound strings that aren't insanely expensive. Fender seems to make only long scale flat wound. D'addario has super long scale flat wound, but I can only seem to find those in light (I want medium, i.e. .105 for an E).

Anyone have experience with the long scale Fender strings on a through body bass? Or ideas on finding super long scale flat wound strings in general?

Fender Flats are excellent, and wound to Fender's specs by D'Addario.

I use GHS Precision Flats {M3050} on my '76 P. They are long enough to string body through.

Huh. Thanks--so the long scale GHS flats will fit in a through body setup?

So I went to go read reviews for the GHS strings, and the one bad review I found was all "These strings are way too long! They aren't long scale! They are extra long scale!"

So, yeah, awesome! They are on their way. Thanks for the tip!

Ok, got the new GHS flat wound long scale strings:

A) They are totally long enough for a through body p-bass.

B) They sound and feel awesome.

These strings are great! It's the first time I have used flat wound (other than fiddling around on a friend's bass the other day with flat wound strings and deciding I wanted to try them out…), and they are fantastic. Why do round wound seem to be the default (i.e. the vast, vast majority of basses I have ever seen or touched have had round wound strings)? Is it just 'cause they are cheaper? Do flat wounds have a secret flaw I don't know about? Do they break easier or die faster or have trouble staying in tune or something? Are they going to give me tumors? Anyone?

Flatwounds are 'Old School', but they are the sound of roots & classic rock, blues, soul, and country. Progressive Rock brought roundwounds to the forefront, and there they've stayed.
Here's my take on GHS Precision Flats:

GHS Precision Flats are a totally viable string series. My favorite GHS sets are the 3050 REGULAR and the 3025. The 3050's are bigger, fatter strings than the 3050M set and really hard to find for some reason. Totally old school sound very close to the standard Jamerson Labella 760M set but with enough less tension I don't worry about neck issues. On the other end of the spectrum is the 3025 set which is my favorite fingerstyle FUNK flat. You can get some real good pops with them and they sound as bright as rounds when new. I guess I'm a guy of extremes. I like both sets a lot and they are as different as a dark night and sunny day and last years and years. The 3025's are so easy to play they are actually fun.
