The question of what type of capacitor was used in the Road Worn Precision Bass came up some time ago.
I recently took my Fiesta red RW P-bass apart to do some work on it and the cap is a polyester chicklet style cap ( .047) and the wiring in the bass is black and white plastic insulation just like the wiring used in the 1970s.

The bass body also has ROAD WRN stamped into the finish under the pick guard. The body is a modern CNC style routing so there is no fooling anyone that this is actually an old Fender bass.

I just thought you would like to know.

Cool. I had always wondered how "classic" the "classic" series instruments were. Still. One could snatch up a Roadworn P used and drop the US 62RI P pick ups and tone circuit in it for a really reasonable price and have a solid vintage style tone machine. I played one a shop around here had hanging around a while back. Other than the frets needing cleaning up it was a great instrument. I just wish they'd use nitro on the necks.

I don't know what they used on my Roadworn P neck but it certainly is applied as a very thin finish. The neck feels very good and as far as a vintage tone machine, I think the bass nails it with its stock electronics.

I own a real 1959 Precision bass and the Road worn sounds very close to it IMO.

The neck is a urethane, though the wear on it really does make it feel nice. I'm not knocking the stock electronics. They are a good sounding bass, but I can definitely hear a difference. The one I played sounded a lot like my old 78. Not a bad thing at all. Just not what I'd go for now. I've often thought about replacing the guts on one of the Classic 50's Laquer models. Yet I've never been able to find one in the wild. They don't stay on the shelves.

The more I play my RW P the more the finish wears off the back of the neck. It "balls up" when it's hot. I can feel it. More than once I've sanded it lightly to smooth it out. No big deal. I love my RWP. It has an older generation P sound- definately better than most of the new P's I've played in the last 8 years. Of course there are some good new P's out there (disclaimer)

THANK YOU!! BC I was the one who asked a while back. Kind of thought it might have a .010 but hey, the tone of my Road Worn is superior to my American Standard, 51 Reissue and the 62 reissues I have played.

If I was in the market for another bass then, the RW 2 tone sunburst Precision would be it good looking bass.

Some vintage reissue P-Basses that have the Fender Original Vintage P-Bass Pickup use a 0.10uf cap because that pickup is so full range. Most of the others use a 0.05 uf or equivalent because the pickups are overwound.

Interesting, thanks Dave. Then again this compiicated the new P bass build I am working on at the moment. I am in the process of picking the electronics and I am trying to decide on caps and pups.

I can strongly recommend the Fender Original P-Bass pickup that was used in the 62 AVRI. Like I said Fender paired it with a 0.10uf tone cap to tame it some but when you use a 0.05uf with it the thing sounds so darn bright it could be mistaken for an active bass. I LOVE it like that. It takes some getting used to having so much tonal range if you are accustomed to a typical P-Bass tone control that does very little at all beyond giving you bass or even more bass. I prefer this pickup to the Duncan Quarter Pounder because it has flatter mids. I've used a lot of P-Bass split coils and that one is the very best.

That pup is on the list. Leaning toward Duncan SPB1, 'Original' , Road Worn or maybe even the new EMG Geezer Butler. I do favor an old school P sound so that is the direction I am going to.

The Geezer is a truly amazing pickup and comes with all new controls and tone cap and wiring. Just check out Geezer playing his custom built Lakland with EMG's Geezer p'ups and it's holy rolling balls of thunder!

Likewise, the Steve Harris signature Seymour Duncan pickup is also killer. My '76 Precision is modified beyond all redemption, so I am thinking of replacing the '85 SD 1/4er Pounder with a Steve Harris.

If I had a box stock Precision, I'd Geezer it all up and throw a party.

Thanks Linnin but does the Geezer have a vintage/classic tone to it?

My Road Worn sounds so different compared to my other 2 Precisions and I want a similar tone but with a bit more punch. The RW has a richer warmth and is so very smooth, especially going through tubes.

Why don't you let Geezer tell you in his own words.
