Is there a difference, other than cosmetic?

I like the look of maple but don't know if it plays different than rosewood.

to me, maple fingerboards sound brighter, n so do ebony ones as ebony is a denser wood. on fretless, maple rele makes a difference, but take into account, the maple is coated with laquer.

Maple and Ebony are brighter sounding than Rosewood.

I find Maple tends to be harder on my fingers, rosewood is much softer. Tonewise, you'll notice a little more high end with Maple. It's all personal preference.

Yes. For reasons that are unimportant here, I took my 2004 USA DLX 5 string Jazz into the dealer to compare it with passive Jazz and Precisions.

My Jazz is Maple; the ones at the dealer were selections of Rose and Maple.

There is no doube for me. Maple (and, yes, Ebony, is much brighter than Rose'). My personal prefence is the Rosewood.

Some time back I tried a Jazz 4 string with a Rose' board and the sound was just delicious ... I should have bought it!!!!!!!!!!!

John

i agree with "billonbass" a maple board not only sounds brighter but feels harder too. Especially when compared to rosewood. Rosewood has a very soft touch to it.

Hey all,

New here to the community but I had to put my 2 cents in on this one. When I was younger I was totally sold on rosewood boards. They looked nice and something about the softness of the feel as well as the mellowness of the tone. Now maybe it's because of my age and all the abuse I've put my ears through, but not I prefer the snappier tone of a maple board. I also love the harder feel of it. I have had many p-bass and j-basses through the years and all have except my original 56 p-bass and an original 58 p-bass had rosewood boards. But I don't own any of those anymore and what I do own is 2 70s J-basses and a 57 reissue p-bass. I have a 62 reissue p-bass, and it's great for certain gigs, but I also keep flatwounds on it for mellower gigs. I prefer the 57 ri though. So I guess that's all I have to say on the matter, but maple boards are da-bomb baby!

Cheers,
Tom

I've said it before and i'll say it again, i wouldn't buy a guitar unless it was rosewood. Maple looks too plain for me. :|

Maple will give you a brighter more punchy tone while rosewood will have a warmer sound to it. It really comes down to a matter of preference. I prefer maple or ebony because it seems to make the bass cut through the mix better
