Hello,

I am restoring a vintage fender 1965 p-bass. The neck was missing the original tuners.
I have purchased the reissue reverse fender tuners p.n 0078834049

The actual tuners fit perfectly at the back of the neck, where you screw them in.
But the round things, I beleave they are called bushings ? Those bushings do not fit the wholes in the neck ( It seem that the radius and diameter of them is few milimeters larger than the wholes made for them in the bass neck.

Any solutions ?

Shall I sand the wholes a bit in the bass neck ? Or is it a bad idea for the vintage neck as such ?
Or maybe there are special bushings I can get to fit on my original 1965 precision bass neck ?

Would love to hear your feedback and solutions for this matter.

Thanks.

You might have the wrong tuners. I'm not an expert on this, but I do know that Gotoh makes Fender-style tuners in at least 2 bolt patterns and 3 different bushing sizes. Bushing sizes are 17.6, 16, and 15. If the screw-hole pattern is rectangular, I believe you should have 15 mm bushings. If the pattern is trapezoid, I think it can be either 16 or the typical 17.6. Best thing to do would be measure the inside of the hole with a cheap caliper that can do inside measurements. Then measure the bushing outside diameter, and compare.

Sorry I can't be of more help, but maybe this will help you solve the mystery.

I would recommend that you take this bass to a knowledgeable luthier to determine if you have the correct size bushings for your 1965 Precision bass. It would be very easy to have had the supplier send you the wrong size bushings when they sent you the replacement tuners.

The busing should fit snugly around the machine head barrel and they should be slightly larger that the holes in the neck so that they can be hammered into the neck and not fall out.

Do not install these tuners with the wrong bushings. It will be very expensive to correct that mistake.

Good luck with the 65 Precision bass.
