Hi,
I recently acquired a Fender Precision, 1974. I have had some doubts on the date and if it has been retouched in paint and the frets have been leveled. Or if this neck originally belong to this instrument.
Please let me know your opinions

Hello, yes, that's correct. Thank you for your comment. My doubt is whether this is an instrument of various parts, an instrument that required frets maintenance, painting, etc.
I would like to get feedback to know better what I have in my hands.

OK helderius,

You've got good clear photos, which is excellent. I'd go ahead and get George Ghrun to give you a photo appraisal. If they need other shots you are obviously very capable of getting them.

The true experts and collectors here will chime in.

Hi, Thank you for your help

Other than the volume pot and missing pickup/bridge covers I don't see anything clearly out of place. Very good plus condition player class instrument. I don't think it is a parts bass or that it has been completely refinished. The body finish might have been touched up here and there but I can't tell enough on my monitor to say. Would like to know the pot code after 137 under the tone cap though. I don't think anything else has been changed and out of place for sure except the volume pot. The split pickup component codes are both 1974. The only other thing that bugs me just a little is the placement of the string tree disc on the headstock which seems in that photo to be just a tad more toward the center of the A tuner post that usual, but that could be an optical illusion based on the angle at which the photo was made. I'd want to clear that up.

All I could suggest doing is change the volume pot to a 250K CTS. The suggestion to do a photo appraisal at Gruhn was a good one. Be sure to tell the the pot code under the tone cap starting with 137 because I think that pot is probably original. The tone pot solder joints also appear that they could be original in the photo. The pickup foam, baseplate, pickup codes and headstock decal all are correct for 1974.

Hi,
Thank you for your comment.
I do have the bridge and pickup cover. I forgot to include them in the photos.
The numbers on the pot are 137-7405Image

At the moment I do not have more photos of the headstock. I am going to check that a.s.a.p.

Your bass appears to be an original mid- 70's Fender Precision bass.
The neck appears to be a correct 1974 spec. Precision neck with a veneer rosewood finger board and you have what appears to be the original tuning machines.

There is now way to tell if a neck was swapped for another neck of the same year or one close to that of the bass.
I have heard of shops swapping necks if someone wanted a maple neck on a sunburst bass with a RW neck and that black bass originally had a maple neck- swapping necks should satisfy the customer, sell a bass and the RW neck would look fine on the black bass. The resulting neck swap would be undetectable.

As far as determining the value- I would go by the current closed auction prices for a 1974 Precision bass with original case like yours and save the money from any GRUHN appraisal. Your bass is a custom color because in 1974 the standard Fender Precision bass finish was 3 color sunburst. Any other color on that model was a custom color.

Good luck with your bass.

Nice bass, and I like it in black as it wasn't real common. The changed out pot hurts it, but I don't see a lot wrong. From the pictures I would put it around $1800-$2000. A correct pot would put it closer to $2K, but the molested solder is still going to knock it down a bit. Vintage Guitar Magazine 2015 Price Guide puts one in excellent vintage condition as $2400-$3000. .

Colors listed for 74 are black, blonde, white, natural, sunburst, and walnut. Natural seems to be the most common, followed by walnut and sunburst. Black is rather unique, from my travels anyway.

I see BD point about the string T. I attached a pick of my 74 to try and compare, but it is a totally different angle. Unfortunately that bass is off site right now so it is the best I can do.

If your 74 sounds like mine, you will be a happy camper.
