My store just got the 2015 Frontline Catalogue and I see that the American Special basses are noticeably absent! What gives?? Also on a side note Squier was also absent from the catalogue entirely.

They dropped Olympic White/Rosewood/Tortoiseshell option from the pricelist.

One explanation is the series is currently phasing out.

P. S. The U.S. site doesn't list Squier and Custom Shop products. You can find the entire inventory through the international websites.

Really sad if they discontinue the Am Spec line since it was a relatively inexpensive way to get an American bass... the strats and teles are still available tho..

I believe the Squiers have a separate catalog now, as well as a website. It looks that way from the way the site is now.

I tried out several of them and loved everyone of them... compared them with American Standard and honestly preferred the Special both in tone and playability. It just felt and sounded better to me. Plus I dig the 70's vibe of the Special.

Not every guitar in same line are same .

Few years ago I try many telecaster 52 reissue to find the best one , same for my Americans Standards.

Can we say the best American Standard play better than the best American Special ?

Yes it is a matter of taste too

I've always liked the looks of the American Special P Bass in red with the black pick guard. Never had any chance to try one out, though. I haven't been in a music store that carries Fender in a couple of years.

Sweetwater has one in sunburst, and Basscentral has one in red. I second the up-vote on the red. Sharp-lookin'.

Of course when I visited Basscentral they just happened to have an AV '63 in faded Sonic blue as the 1st item on the page. W-A-N-T.

I just looked there and I see what you mean. That '58 they had there with the white finish and gold pick guard looks just like my Japanese 50's reissue I had many moons ago, sans the covers and I don't recall any thumb rests either. I suppose that would be the case, since that's what it was based on. That was a sweet bass I should have never gotten rid of.

I'm a little late to this conversation but there are still some left at MF.
