So I'm thinking about having G&G make a case for me (In Blonde Tolex to match my Bassman rig ;) ) and I wanted to put this out there. Now I know some of the real early style G&G's had the center pocket and I had a Musician's Friend knock off years ago that had one. However, this case will basically replace the stock Tweed for my 57 Reissue for gigging purposes.

What are everyone's thoughts, and experiences with the two types of cases? Personally I really liked the big pocket, but also remember hating having to pick up the bass to access it. Are there any other concerns I should be taking into consideration? Why did Fender or G&G stop using the center pocket? Does anyone know?

Thanks.

As far as I remember, Fender branded G&G cases were always made with a side compartment not a center compartment.
I wouldn't think that it would make that much difference as I would rather have the additional storage space of a center compartment.

May not be directly related, but the last 2 cases I bought (1 separately, 1 came with the bass) have full neck support, which I guess precludes a center storage area. I really like that full neck support idea and will probably never buy another case without it. Storage I can do without b/c I carry 2 gig bags anyway, actually gym bags full o' stuff. Sorry in advance if this is n/a to you, carry on, etc.......

You may be right. I could have sworn I saw some old Precisions (early 50's prior to the Split Coil design). One's that looked like the traditional tweed, but with the center pocket. I had always assumed they might be a transitional case between the original Precision's leather gig bag and fitted case and the later tweed side compartment case from the 57 period. However, you might be right and these were just aftermarket G&G replacements purchased for basses that came with gig bags, ect.

Nope, this was right in line with what I was thinking. The only other downfall I seem to remember about that center pocket case was that I always wondered about the neck. It didn't seem to have the best support. Now to be fair the neck on my 57 Reissue is like a baseball bat so I'm not really concerned about it getting messed up very much, but if it's a serious concern I'd like to know. However, I'd also think that if it was a serious concern then at some point these cases would have been completely phased out. Thanks for the input!

Just want to update. I went with the side compartment. I am sooooo impressed with G&G and the work they do. I think they absolutely nailed it, and I'm perfectly happy. I think the new rig, coupled with the matching case looks perfect.

Hope you all dig it.

I love the center pocket in mine... keeps stuff from moving around and banging up against my bass. Also seems to give great support. These cases are definitely on the heavy side, though. I have one of these that I bought back in the day if I do not want to lug around such a heavy case...

Big problem with this case is the absolute lack of usable storage... the vintage case is much better in that aspect.

I like using the G&G Black Tolex for my Jazz. A good solid case, and it has some storage in it also.
