First of all: Im back and have more GAS than ever.

Second, I am looking for a pickguard change again... Heres my little brainfart and I wonder what you guys think of it:

1) Take the tort pickguard off my Roger Waters P bass and put a 57p gold anodized pickguard on there.
2) Buy myself the Matt Freeman P bass (the vintage white version) and put the gold pickguard on there to give it that 57 feel (dont you guys dare scold me with accusations of not getting a proper 57'er or even mention trying to sell it off as one, I hate folks doing that.)

Go gold. I like it. I have it. It makes my bass sound better- specially with the thumb rest- adds a couple db.....really.

Oddly enough one of the first things I did with my 57 Reissue was swap the Gold guard for a 10 hole Tort, and then I eventually swapped that for the single ply black bakelite I'm running now. One of the great things about Fenders is that you can play with the looks of the instrument by just swapping the guard. Try the gold. What's it hurt? If you use it for awhile and end up wanting to change back, or even try something totally different where's the harm? I think it's nice to have a couple guard options on basses I really love. If you're going to stick with them a long time you might fall in and out of love with the look but not the way the bass plays and sounds. Having the option to change it up is good. Try it!

The gold guard looks great on various colored precision's go for it. I wish they made a 4 ply gold plastic guard, I would have one for my bass.

If I had an Artist Series instrument I'd leave it alone. But it is yours so you can swap them out if you want.

I love the look of the gold anodized pickguard but MAN I HATE IT when i graze my fingernail across it while playing lol.... Never had one on any of my basses, but we had a 50's reissue in my shop for awhile that got LOTS of in store demoing by me lol.... They look awesome but can be like a nail file sometimes.

I just bought a white Am Std P - the first thing it gets is either a:
- shiny gold pick guard
- white pearl.

@KoP: Thats quite the intresting notion there.
@Dave: I know, I respect your opinion, but it hasnt kept me from turning my Roger Waters prec intowhat it has become
@eyezomb: Well Ive cut my fingers on the pup and bridge covers on my roger waters in the spur of the moment when playing a bit too enthousiasticly with a pick during a jam. Ive seen other folks complain about it feeling like a nailfile, is it really that bad?

Its going to be a while before i get the matt freeman prec, so still not sure wether to pick it up now for my roger waters prec or wait and put it on the VW freeman.

Good to see some folks still around after all this time by the way.

It can be... I suggest finding a 50s reissue or a P Bass Special and checking out that pickguard

There are various colors of mirrored pick guards now including gold. I put a mirror my my '76 Precision in '85. It's still on there

Ditto what eyezomb said about thumbnail on those anodized guards. I tried one once, but accidental thumbnail contact felt so damn C-R-E-E-P-Y (like dragging it on a blackboard), I took that sucker off after a day or 2 and took a deep breath of relief. I do like how they look, though.

I actually like the feel of the anodized aluminum. I'm just not a fan of the gold unless the bass has gold hardware. I like the plain aluminum and the black anodized guards. I've been thinking about having one of those made, too. They feel much sturdier than the plastics to me. More like a control plate than just a scratch guard.
