Great! Are you going to leave the stock strings on it? It looks super. Nice acquisition.

You know, I'm not really sure. I know my usual inclination is to put on flatwounds, but I've been jamming on the bass with the stock rounds, and they are doing pretty good. Maybe I'll live with it for a couple of days and decide. I already have them on the Jazz and the violin bass, and they're both broken in good, now. You know, I've never actually had flats on a Precision Bass, but then again, I've only owned one, well technically, two, if you count that MIM Fender Standard I had in 2007, very briefly. When I had the 50's Reissue, I used roundwound strings at the time, that I remember. I do remember using Dean Markley Blue Steels with it, because I remember the sticker that came with the package. Oddly enough, that was about the last time I even used that brand of strings. They were usually more expensive than I was willing (or usually able) to spend for that. I wasn't too picky about that sort of thing back then and often went cheap.

My choice would be either Flats, or Nylons. A real nice thump with either.

Yeah, I know they do have the thump, plus less string noise when your sliding around. I'll think about it some more, and just play on it for now.

Like we know, you can't try out strings on a particular bass. The sound bites are somewhat helpful, but they don't give the sound of one bass, compared to another bass strung with the same strings.

That's true. There are so many variables, including the individual playing the instrument. I imagine if you and me both played exactly the same bass into the same amp with the same settings, they won't sound exactly the same, except maybe a fundamental tone from the amp and the bass. It might sound like a Fender, but two different people playing it, if that makes sense.

That all makes perfect sense. Everything on a Bass, or connected to one is variable. Setups are such an imperfect issue from one player to another. I read, or hear some players saying how poor a bass is, needing a re-setup. Like their idea of the perfect setup is right for all players. What a load of crap.

I suppose there are some general guidelines that can help with certain things, but it is definitely a personal preference thing, I think.

Here's my recently imported from the USA '66 P bass. Assuming of course I can figure out how to add pics...

Which I can't. Is there some guidance somewhere?

Fabulous acquisition, Paul! Congratulations. As for strings just keep the stock rounds on until they are dead, then decide. It is good to have a roundwound bass on tap when you need/want that sound. I keep my jazz strung in GHS Bass Boomers, but the Fender rounds are plenty good too. I have a fresh sealed set of balanced tension D'Addario EXL-170BT nickel plated steel roundwounds you may have free of charge. They are excellent in all regards. Here's a review

Thanks. 8) I'm almost totally reluctant to even mess with the strings on it, since the action is set up perfectly on it. Whoever inspected and did the setup did an excellent job with it. I'd even say this bass plays and sounds comparatively to the Japanese-made 50's reissue Precision Bass I had in the mid 90's, at least from my memory of it. I've always regretted getting rid of that bass, but at least I finally got a suitable replacement.
