I switched to flats like a year ago and instantly... Not much of a change sound wise. So I've had them on my jazz for a long time and my playings got a Lot better while using the strings. My new bass the '51 reissue just came in with the standard roundwound and I gotta say, the harsh over tones of the rounds really frig with my sound.

So any way I play 95% finger style and 5% pick. IMO there are 4 sounds I can get: roundwounds with pick, roundwounds with fingers, flatwounds with pick, flatwounds with fingers. Seriously, it's all diferent, to me any way. I feel a lot better playing with flats and just using the new P Bass with rounds pretty much tells me I'll like it with flats.

Hey gang,
Here's my 1977 P-bass. I bought this new in 1978. It was originaly see through light brown with a black pick guard. It was bass of the year in 1978.
This Bass has been modified alot. Brass Nut, a brass Moon D-Tuner/Hipshot, Reshaped neck, Original EMG pickups from when the company had only one line, and a Badass Bass Bridge II. I cut into it before it was cool, back in 1980, to have that Jazz Bass bridge sound happening. It is the bass that I used on the 2006 Bullet Boys tour.

Lenny, you look like a big guy already. You need a bass like that to stand out even more?

This is my 2004 Sting Signature P. It features the autograph of the members of Deep Purple on their visit to Peru, in February 2008. L to R: Ian Paice, Don Airey, Steve Morse, and Roger Glover. I couldn't get Ian Gillian to sign :)

I don't like those cheesy Stratocaster knobs on a Precision. A set of chrome "dome" or "flat-top" knobs makes for a better feel.

Fortunately Fender has replaced the cheesy Strat knobs with genuine USA "flat-top" in 2003 and offered a maple fingerboard over a tinted neck a couple of years ago!

The knobs won't make me a better player. I did try the set off of my Squier P and they didn't fit.

A bit late to the party, but here's my '76 Walnut FL with replaced anodized PG and customized covers to match (I've kept the original covers and used a new set - they look more matched in person). I also threw on a new pair of gold knobs with pearl tops:

Hey rubeni, I have a 78-79 fretless that I have been trying to find out more about recently that also has no holes where others have covers. Your serial number is pretty close to mine. S912060

Fender noticed no one played with the covers on ,so to shave a nickel they just stopped providing them or drilling the holes, less cost for them (I am sure as a buyer you saw the price's drop to reflect this ,yes?)
