This is the FSR Deluxe P-Bass Special in it original active form.

Discontinued and replaced by a revised model featuring a BadAss II bridge with grooved saddles, passive electronics and a top-mounted jack. Available in Surf Green (parchment p/g) and Black (tortoise p/g). No longer made.

(pictured bass is not mine).

Quote:
Fender has made few passive P/J basses with a pickup select switch, like the short lived JP90, which allowed you to get an exact P-Bass and J-Bass tone by switching between the pickups to make it sound exactly like a P or a J.

The Boner Precisions do have that toggle. They also boasted a series/parallel push-push selector for the neck pickup which once pushed down gave a more Jazz neck pickup sound.

Like I said that FSR was done a year or two ago. Of course they are mostly gone from new inventory in the UK. It was only sold in the UK as far as I know but a few did find their way to the USA in the secondary market. I saw one for sale as recently as 3 months ago. The second UK FSR version has different stuff, the bridge as you mentioned, but also the electronics. I was suggesting the one I posted and not version 2, the first FSR version with the better pickups and electronics plus the Fender high mass bridge is the one I'd seek. The current mass production P-Bass Special would work just as well with a bridge and pickup upgrade. I would not use the Leo Quan bridge if there was any way around it due their complete lack of consumer relations and post sale support. Leo Quan is now just an outsourced design with no manufacturing facility of their own and no parts inventory. The corporate address for Leo Quan B.A. Music is now the residence of the current CEO Glen Quan and not the former company address where they actually made the bridges. As far as I'm concerned Leo Quan bridges are a dead issue.

The George Blanda "Boner" you mention was called the Precision Plus Deluxe and it was discontinued in 1995 after a six year or so run, and like the one I suggested it too is no longer available.

Also the UK active P-Bass Special wasn't discontinued, it was a limited FSR in the first place.

That's a pretty cool bass. It sort of reminds me of something that they had out in the late 80's, like one of those Power Jazz Specials or those models that had those white pick ups (Lace Sensors?)

Forum member Buckeyebass owns one of those green FSRs in BD picture. Last I heard from him he enjoys it very much.

I had a chance to play one of those in a GC. It was a killer bass. If it had the P neck instead of the J I probably would have left with it. I was that impressed with it.

Yeah it is probably my favorite FSR bass ever.

The Precision Bass Plus was the Boner Bass, the Plus Deluxe is a different animal having backrouted controls and active circuitry. The Boners were discontinued in 1993 whilst the Deluxe Precision Plus (the precursor to the American Deluxe of the 1995-2010 period) was taken out of production in 1994.

You know, I think I remember these. Hey brotherdave, you are actually referenced about it on Wikipedia. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fender_Precision_Bass_Plus

Hi there

Thanks everyone for all your help there. You've all been very kind with your answer and made a very difficult decision much easier than it would have been without your input. I really appreciate it :)

I've gone and pulled the trigger on the Fender American Standard Precision in 3-tone sunburst with a tortoiseshell pickguard and rosewood fretboard. I've always liked the look of the precision with this combination of colours and cool look. I also decided to pick up a couple of compressor pedals too which I always intended doing. I picked up a Diamond BCP-1 and an MXR M87. Can't wait to fiddle around with them. Everything should be here by Monday :D

My second choice was the Tony Franklin fretted Precision. I felt in the end that the price was just too much though. I also don't fancy artist models with other people's names on them. Given that his name is on the neck plate, I guess this could have been swapped out. However, I don't think I could have been bothered doing this after spending so much. I figured I couldn't go wrong with the Standard in the end.

Thanks again for your help. I really appreciate it.

Winter.

3 Tone Sunburst finish, alder body, tort guard and rosewood fretboard make this bass ooze tons of '60s flavors while maintaining modern playability, with the CS '60s split humbucker giving you the authentic vintage P-Bass thump you're craving for.

This American Standard P would sound better with a CS '60s linear single coil in the bridge for the best of both worlds: lots of thump and growl into the mix!

Here's the bass I'm talking about: a limited edition American Standard PJ with CS '60s pickups and a comfortable Jazz Bass neck.

Cheers guys

I'm not ruling out another bass at some point in future so a PJ like that, or some of the others, may be in the equation. For now though, I'm looking froward to playing and recording with a staple of music production.

Thanks

Winter.

The main thing about the typical passive Vol/Vol/Tone P/J's is that they don't sound exactly like a P when the neck pickup is soloed and they don't sound exactly like a Jazz when the bridge pickup is soloed. They have a slightly different voicing. This is due to loading in the circuit from the other pickup which is still present even when one pickup or the other is soloed. Fender has made few passive P/J basses with a pickup select switch, like the short lived JP90, which allowed you to get an exact P-Bass and J-Bass tone by switching between the pickups to make it sound exactly like a P or a J.

Not making me feel any better!!!!

I'm supposed to get my custom Tele back this week. Took it back to the builder to have him put a set of piezo acoustic pickups in and also had him replace the 3 way switch with an extra volume pot. My plan was no switch and 3 concentric pots with split knobs so that each humbucker and the piezos have their own volume and tone control.

Have over $600 in electronics invested in it - now scuttled by circuit loading? Been looking forward to all the new tones my arrangement can give me. About the only thing I like about my Les Paul is that I can play lead with the bridge pup and blend in just a little neck for some warmth or play rhythm with the neck pup and add a little attitude with the bridge pup. Was thinking I could do the same on my Tele plus the separate output sending the piezo pickups to an acoustic amp.

Looks like maybe the 3 way switch will be going back in.
