I just bought an old '72 P-bass maple neck that definitely needs new frets (I knew that before I bought it). What should a refret using SS fretwire cost? I'm just looking for a ballpark figure. So far I've called two luthiers in the area: one guy said it would cost about $700 because of the stainless steel fretwire ($500 for a nickel refret), while the other guy quoted me a price of $1,000!

I live in Brooklyn, which probably has something to do with it. However, when I lived in San Francisco (my previous home), I got a beautiful SS refret on a '72 Jazz bass for $350 total, which included Buzz Feiten tuning no less, and SF isn't exactly known for it's low cost of living :?

If there are any New Yorkers on the forums, I'd love to know what you think a maple neck SS refret should cost. Even better, if you can give me the name of a luthier who will do it for less than $500, that would be great!

(fwiw, I prefer SS to nickel because I tend to squeeze the neck too tight, which creates fret dents after about 6 months. For me, nickel-plated strings + SS frets = perfection)

$1000 for a refret? That sounds pretty insane to me. There's a place in Cranston, RI that charges $250 for a refret with no binding and $300 for one with binding, but since you are in Brooklyn that might be too much of a haul for you. I've been to NYC a few times, but my girlfriend has family in Greenwhich, CT as a stop over point that's on the NY border, anyhow.
