Hey! I really want an MIA Standard Precision but wondered about how the 60s CS pups would sound for Rock & Punk. I REALLY like how the MiM Standard pups sound w/ a pick. I like to sound very bright & biting. Never played on an MIA, does it sound a lot warmer? Please shoot me staight

Well, in my experience the new American Standard P Basses sound similar to a "hot" vintage style pick up. (something like Seymour Duncan might come up with) They don't have as much "thump" as a 62 Reissue pup, or the sweet low mid punch of the 57 Raised A. However, they sound very similar to the 59 bass pick up but almost a tad overwound. Rich tone with just a touch of edge. They are very "on" and a bit growly with roundwounds. I think they'd work just fine for edgier rock tones. Should be a really good fit, to be honest.

Awesome, man. Good info to keep in mind. I've used flats, but I'm definitely roundwound. Just haven't had a chance to try one, but everything I've read about the MIA Standard REALLY makes me want one. I LOVE my MiM, but I wanna go to the next level. Thanks a ton, you seem to know yo pups & I got an answer I wanted to hear.

The Am should work fine for you.

I have a Mex and an Am, both relatively recent purchases. Stock, they sound real close, except the Am has slightly more authority in the bottom end, without (at least to my ears) losing anything in the mids. I verified this when they both had Rotos on them. That extra bottom may be an asset or a liability, depending on how and where you play the instrument -- I mean in terms of right-hand position and technique. I'd do a comparison for you except atm they have different strings and tone circuits, so it'd be apples and oranges.

Frankly, any differences between the two, with identical strings and identical playing style, could be eq'd away with just a slight turn of a knob or two back at the console: a slight low end bump for the Mex -- say 3 or 4 dB at 60 with a Q of 1 -- and you wouldn't be able to tell the difference. And, any advantages an Am brought to the table would be inaudible if just one of these occurred: the sound person lacked training or was just having a bad day, the system sucked as a whole or was being overdriven, the crowd was loud, or the player was using difference-masking pedals. Which covers, what, 95% of most large gigs  ? (Sorry for the buzzkill perspective.)

Generally my Am stays at home and my Mex sees almost 100% of the duty, because under real-world conditions, the Am "adds no value," as they say. It's not the fault of the Am, it's the fault of reality.

That's a fair point. Depending on the music you're playing. The rig you're using. Or what the sound situation is. It's all a fairly moot point. I mean, as far as Hard Rock, ect are concerned. If you're going for a specific tone and have the equipment to reproduce it the sound guy should be working with you to make sure that is the sound that is getting to the crowd. If you're just running a solid state rig, and distorting your signal then to be honest any split coil Precision should be able to do the job. The American Standard is fully capable of serving in pretty much any capacity. Even the more discriminating genres in terms of bass tone. If you are determined to get an AmStd then you should be just fine. Rounds, string them through the bridge, and roll the highs most of the way in would be the way to go, imo.

You guys rock. Sounds like I'm going to get the sound I want, I mean, it's a Precision. I DO use a solid state, works for me. The soundman at the usual venue has to do very little while checking me. I love my MiM, absolutely nothing wrong with it. Might be putting an MIA in harm's way if I play out with it, but my Mexi takes a beating & is strong. Just wanted to know about any differences in the pups, sounds like they do what my stock MiM pups do. So, string thru the bridge, not the body?

That would be my recommendation if you're going for an edgier sound. Best of luck. Keep us posted, and share pics of the bass when you get it if you can.

If you're still wanting an American then go for the American Special... it has the looks and sounds of a late 70's P Bass anyway

The only thing that would keep me from recommending the Special is the greasebucket tone circuit. If you're keeping the highs totally rolled in then it won't make a bit of difference. However, when you roll off highs with the greasebucket it defeats the perceived "bump" in lows that happens with the traditional P bass tone circuit. So it will look and sound just fine with the highs rolled in, but when you back off the tone knob it won't behave like a 70's Precision. However, they do look absolutely killer and do have the spirit of the 70's look.

I DO usually have the tone cranked, but sometimes bring it down...good to have that option. It seems like a Am. Special is not too much different from my Mexi. There has been a special at my local Sam Ash for two years now, the same one so I may check it out, but I'm pretty set on an American Standard. But first...I need to get 410s. Gotta get my rig going strong for a little excursion

Hey, why stop at 410s? Get 810s and good tube head and you're good to go! I think the Am Spec is just the Hwy One with a glossy finish.

I must say, I'm intrigued by the Special, need to try it. The Greasebucket sounds like a cool feature, love me some high s. But everything else about it seems like a MiM, like the bridge & tuners. With getting a hard case, I might as well get an MIA Standard being that it comes with one. Thanks for the recommendation. 8 10s would definitely be cool, but I have a sedan & the guitarists would not appreciate the power as I would

Just watched a video where a guy did a 4 way demo of the N3's, the 60's and 2 others. Same bass and assuming same strings. The 60's seemed to sound the best but that is based on the sound coming out of my laptop speakers.
