Well had these on since the 31st of January and I'm loving everything, about having flatwounds on a Precision bass I understand it now :D . The Fender flats I bought (9050L) sound & feel great and are now my string of choice though, I would like to know why Fender don't do a 45-105 set in flatwounds?
I may try the 9050ML set 50-65-85-100 but would it make my bass sound, any better than it does now. I'm happy and glad I switched over to flatwound strings :D .

The MLs are my string of choice. I don't know if they'll make it sound "better", but the thicker strings of varying degrees may give you a different balance between strings that may or may not be more to your liking.

Honestly, over the years I think M's might be best on a split coil P bass. If I ever find myself losing my mind and up for taking the tasty broken in set that is on my 57RI off. I may try a set of Ms I've got kicking around. However, for my CS 55 P the MLs are absolutely PERFECT. The string balance is to die for with the single coil P pup. Full rich, and smooth. Never too much, never too little.

As always, all my opinions are just that and only reflect what I like, and have experienced. So take them all with a grain of salt. If you change them out just save the set of Ls you have in case you end up wanting to switch back! Flats are AWESOME!

I think it all has to do with balanced string-to-string volume. I'd stick with the 9050L for the lower total stringset tension on the neck. That 55-105 set has got to be very high tension and you'd have to keep a close watch on your neck relief and make truss rod adjustments as necessary.

You know, I once put a set of heavy gauge flats on a bass I use to have years ago, not knowing at the time about dealing with any neck adjustments and they wound up bending the neck. Luckily, it corrected itself after I replaced them back to a lighter gauge string. I've gone even lighter gauges now than I use to, so no worries about that, anyway. I prefer the feeling of those. Plus, it's easier to bend the strings.

It's actually fairly easy to do a truss rod adjustment on modern Fender basses with the t-handled ball hex wrench. If you have a friend to depress your E string on the first fret (if not use a good strong capo) while you depress at the last fret use a 0.012" (twelve thousandths) feeler gauge from the top of the 9th fret to the bottom of your E string. This is for modern 9 1/2" radius necks. For vintage 7 1/4" radius necks use a fourteen thousandths gauge. I've found that I like fourteen thousandths relief on both necks. Adjust your truss rod and a set your neck relief first. Then set your intonation. All will be copacetic and simpatico. 8)

That's good to know. I should get one of those gauges to use.

Thanks linnin the 9050L is staying as my string choice, I haven't had to do anything to the neck on my bass since putting them on & that's the way I want it to stay :D . I still am getting used to how comfortable flats feel on your fingers, & how good they sound through an amp 8) .

Are modern spec Fender Precision necks really THAT unstable? I find that hard to believe. Especially with the graphite rods they muck them up with now days. I've never had a Precision neck that has had issues with higher tension flats. Maybe a Jazz neck as some of them have so little to them.

However, if you're worried about it then definitely don't change them. You know your bass better than anyone.

Plus, didn't you just put these on not that long ago? I'd give them at least a good 6 months of heavy playing. It usually takes a couple of weeks to break them in and then they really start hitting the sweet spot after a few good solid months of work. If after 6 months you still feel you're missing something then I'd start to think about a change.

Not at all KoP, in fact just the opposite is true with modern Fender necks being far more stable than vintage. My 2012 Jazz is leaps and bounds better than any Fender I played from the 1970's. I've had to make one small tweak to my truss rod. While my '76 Precision has needed three adjustments since I installed a set of M3050 GHS Precision Flats 45-105 in 2013. Total set tension is a very reasonable 189 pounds. Going over the 200 pound tension mark is something I would never do, nor advise. The heavier 55-110 and up sets are well over that mark being about 220 pounds.

I would never in a million years instal a set of LaBella Jamersons. That super high tension set ruined his bass because he never adjusted it and never let anyone else touch it.

I don't know. My 57RI never moves. My CS 55 never moves, but I wouldn't expect a quartersawn soft V neck to move. My old 51 RI never moved after 6 years with Fender flats. (which granted are less tension than Labellas, but more tension than most) My 78 Precision never had any problems either and I ran Ms on that for awhile.

I've never ran into a P neck that was that temperamental. Yet, I hear people talk all the time about not running flats. The Jamersons aside because they are so robust. A set of Fender ML flats isn't going to do anything to a good P neck. At all. Fender flats may be on the higher tension side of flatwounds now days, but I don't think that was always the case.

As far as graphite support rods I chalk that nonsense up to the same corporate thinking that switched basses to modern fretboard radius when it was adopted on the guitars. For other models it may be something that was warranted, but unstable P necks are the exception in my experience. Not the rule.

Hello Gentlemen thanks for all the information & advice, you do learn something new everyday if you choose to listen :) . KoP I have only had the bass since January & when I ordered it, I asked for a setup and the bass arrived with a great action no fret buzz so I'm dubious about putting a heavier set of strings on in case I mess it up .As I would hate to have to either take the scratchplate off, or the neck to re-set the neck.
Your right though the new necks with the posiflex rods should be OK with the Fender M set of flats, but for me the highest I would go would be with the ML's 50-100. The set I liked the look of was the CL 45-60-80-105, but they are no longer available, unless you buy both the ML & M sets and make your own  .
Linnin I never knew how much tension there was in a set of bass strings , least of all in a set of flatwounds again learning something new. I do like the whole flatwound string use now and the rounds that came with my bass, are now on my Squier Precision if ever I feel the need to have a go.

Aren't there sites out there that sell individual strings? Maybe not bass strings. We always get the shaft. :?

This got me thinking of my own feelings on the Fender sets and how they are my preferred tone and I love how comfortable they are. However, with my 57RI I really wouldn't mind a little more meat to my D and G strings. My E and A sound perfect. However, unlike my CS 55 on which the ML set is perfectly balanced all the way across. The D and G are noticeably thinner due to the pick up layout. Not to the point where it bothers me. The bass can nail that old school split P sound dead to rights, but it might be something to think about down the line.

If I do ever change my strings I know I have a set of MLs and a set of Ms kicking around the house. Perhaps I'll use the E and A from the ML set, and the D and G from the M set and see how that works?

Good luck with anything you do or don't do! Thanks for the inspiration. I have no idea why I never thought of it. :?
