Hey everyone. Brand new to this forum and don't know a whole lot about the bass. I've been looking at getting a p-bass but I'm not sure what to look for. I was told that I should avoid Squier if possible. I mostly play punk/rock stuff. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

I went to Guitar Center and ran a search for used Fender Precisions and there are quite a few very nice made in Mexico Standards in the $300-$400 range. What's nice is they will ship to your closest store for free, and you have a 30 day return period should something go wrong.

Squiers are good, but maybe trade in what you have, along with what money you have & go for a Fender Standard Precision. That's how I got mine & the salesman even gave me a discount cuz it was a floor model. Maybe give that a shot. Fender Standard Precision is the one...

Another good suggestion if you can find one used on ebay etc.. would be the Fender American Special. It's supposedly fairly close to a late 70's Precision.

Do music stores still do layaway? I haven't done that in over 20 years, so I'm not sure if they still do, or if the chain stores would. If you can swing it, you could try that option and get the nicest bass you can afford over $400. It will take longer to acquire and require some patience, but in the end it will probably be worth it. Then again, you might find a good bargain, but I'm a little iffy about buying used gear, unless I have some sort of warranty or guarantee. A lot of times (I've been victim of this once) you're buying other people's problems that they are trying to get rid of. You really have to be careful and do your research, otherwise you can get stuck with crap.

Musician's Friend and Guitar Center also offer Financing and unless your credit is really really bad they usually approve.

Oh yeah, if you have a credit card, or know someone who'll help you out with one, American Musical Supply http://www.americanmusical.com has payment options (anywhere from 3 to 12 payments, once a month) on their new merchandise. I've bought a lot of my gear that way through them that way, and they have excellent customer service, and fast delivery. I've had to return a few items and it was no hassle. They also have killer deals on Open Box and Scratch and Dent items. For example I got a brand new Orange Terror Bass 1000 1000 watt head for only $360 that normally costs $1049 because it was listed as Scratch and Dent. The only thing wrong with it was the box was previously opened. That was one hell of a find! The one negative I do have with them is they have a tendency not to carry a lot of stock, compared to someone like Sam Ash or Guitar Center, or they'll discontinue carrying stuff for some reason. Maybe they want to only carry stuff that really moves? So, you might not exactly find what you want there. I've had to shop elsewhere like either Amazon or Musician's Friend on occasion because of that. Plus, those two and eBay takes Pay Pal Credit, which I use and probably why I'm now in a little bit of debt. :P Credit cards and GAS are a very dangerous combination, indeed.
