Hello. I'm curious to have opinions on '51/'55 P bass style pickups.

Right now, I have the regular single coil in my '55 Custom Shop P. While I LOVE the tone, I would be happy to get rid of the hum. I'm curious to know how the Seymour Duncan STACKED COIL installed stock on some '55 style bass (ie the Dusty Hill signature) sounds compared to the regular single coil, and how is it wired (series, or parallel)?

Thanks for any info!
David C.

In my experience with the Lindy Fralin split coil it sounds more like a 2nd generation (1957) P-Bass than a single coil P-Bass. I think money and time on these is better spent on copper shielding to ground both the pickup and control cavity and making sure the chromed pickup cover is on it. Yes the splits and stacks are quieter even after a thorough shielding job, but they don't sound like the original single coil to me and that is the tone I want. So does Dusty Hill.

Thanks for any info!

Same here. The Fralin sure is quiet but it's not the tone I want. +1 on it sounding more like the 'regular' split coil P pickup (`57+)

That's why I'm curious about the SD stacked '51. Wiring it in parallel might be the trick as well... No one ever did that test?

How does Fender wire it when it comes stock on their '51/'55/Dusty Hill ?

Absolutely! I use them and like them, but not for your application.

Glad to see you post this here, Dave. I knew you'd get better responses. I often wondered why the Fralin Style pick up never employed the S-1 switch but in reverse. To me it would make sense that for a bass offering Single Coil P tone and design, but hum cancelling properties that this would be a no brainer. Simply wire the pick ups in series, and when you depress the top of the knob you get them in parallel. It's a technology that Fender implemented with the split coil. Not moving it over to the single coil pick up design seemed very strange to me. Though I suppose it could be argued that a Custom Shop 55 with a reversed S-1 configuration might effectively eliminate the need for either a split or single coil P. Thus hurting business.

As far as the Hill signature. (which is the Stacked coil you are referring to) I don't think it sounds much like a first generation P. Maybe weaker than the inline split coil so closer in tone in terms of presence. (at least on the low end) However, nothing about it sounds like a 51/55 stock single coil to me. Sounds closer to the TV Jones Gretsch style pick ups to me.
