I inherited my fathers 1962(?) P-Bass with Original Case. Can someone give me some insight on this bass and what it might be worth? Not sure if I want to sell it as I remember him playing it 30+ years ago but its been in its case ever since.

Thanks!

Rather than a re-finish, you've got an un-finish. Either one takes your Daddy's bass from collectror status to player status and cuts the value in half. The neck looks like a much more modern neck, making the bass a parts bass rather than a refinished original.

Send it to George Ghrun for a hands on appraisal. He's the true expert all the collectors trust.

As it looks to me right now it's just another parts bass even if all Fender and is worth about $500 fair market value.

Thanks Linnin for taking the time to check it out.
I will look into contacting George as I don't think its just a "parts" bass.

The next is the original neck. I just took it apart to see what the stamp was.

Do not SEND it to Mr. Gruhn for an in hand appraisal. That requires shipping both ways and fees are $75 to up to $225 for PRE-CBS Fenders like this one. Instead do a photo appraisal online via email for $50. Much cheaper and faster. Read more about the various appraisal services Gruhn Guitars offers here: https://guitars.com/appraisals

Natural was not a color in 62. So that makes it PLAYER CLASS at best, however it could still be worth a substantial amount, about $2300 to $2900 around here but ONLY if it is otherwise original besides the finish being stripped. If it turns out to be a parts bass it will be worth much, much less. I'm not sure about it as I've not studied the photos enough. Make good clear well lighted closeups of headstock, stampings, serial etc and send to Gruhn via email.

I've looked the photos over and the knobs are not original, they look to be amp knobs. The bridge cover is crooked, don't know why. The headstock decal matches 62. The pickguard and case also. The neck might need refitting to the body as string alignment looks way off.

Whatever happen it is, you have a bass with a story, which is kinda cool - the stories for my basses are all the same:
- read website
- pay retailer
- play bass.

Amp knobs +1

I had this really long reply ready, but let me reduce it a bit and focus more on the bottom line.

If the only changes are the finish, the knobs, and the missing pup cover/guard, I like Dave's $2900, but I would start higher if I was selling it. I am guessing it will appraise around $3250-$3500, but as pointed out, that is higher than it will likely sell for.

However, I think there is more value on the lower end than $500, at least in my geographic area. I would think the loaded neck, assuming no refinish or strip, original tuners, string tree and decal, functioning truss rod, and original frets in playable condition, would easily sell for $650-$750 all day long, and to the right collector/buyer, even more.

There is a market for refurbished pre CBS basses, and I think they make excellent projects. If I was looking for a project, I would be very comfortable paying $1250 for the loaded neck and empty body (assuming original/not modified wood), and more if the pick guard, bridge and bridge cover, screws, etc. are legit. And at that price I could make a nice profit down the road if I wanted to.

For your photo appraisal, make sure you get close up picture of the code/date stamp on pots too, not just an overall picture of the controls, pickups, wiring, etc. Pots and caps are cheap, so the electronics have to be original and unmolested to bring this bass up to that $3000 area. I hope it all checks out for you. Nice piece of history. And pbasses from that era sound fantastic.

Please come back and let us know how it goes.

Good luck!

Cool bass plus it was your dad's, so that makes it priceless to you.
I concur with the other assessments except let me urge you to have this bass documented photographically before you send it or leave it with anyone.

The value of these instruments goes up or down very quickly if parts are replaced and if your bass has original pickups, wiring , pick guard and neck, it is of a substantial value as it stands.

Good luck with it.

Thank you all for the assessment of the bass and taking the time to look and comment.
I agree for sure the knobs are from an amp as it might have been a personal preference during performance to have a 1-10 option for volume and tone (11 would have been better right?) who knows.

I now play it regularly on my album I'm working on and I am taking it tomorrow morning to get it appraised here in Austin, TX. Everything else minus the UN-finish and the knobs, I believe is 100% authentic.
I even have the old case which is getting quite worn and the leather handle and ends are falling apart, but it could be worth something as well.
I decided to put it up for auction only after I finish my 3rd album in April using the bass as a tribute to my Dad.
He played with some old rock bands such as Ozark Mountain Daredevils.

I also have Ian Andersons of Jethro Tull's actual Pearl Flute he used in studio and in live performances with handwritten track list it was used on and a Certificate of Authenticity, I will eventually sell as well. (I know this is a Fender Forum)

Wish money wasn't so tight or would hold on to this for generations!

So you are saying don't let it out of my sight without full photo documentation? As people will scavenge authentic parts from it? Thanks for the tip.
