I am the original owner of a 76 MIA p-bass. Natural finish with maple neck; 8/10 condition; all original hardware and components. Considering selling but would like to get an education opinion on what it might be worth???

First of all no one can say without good clear photos. You'll need those anyway. I've got a '76 Precision, and I'll tell ya what's coming out of Corona, CA right now brand new is better than any CBS Fender I ever played.

Go here for an official appraisal from George Gruhn.
https://guitars.com/appraisals
You'll need this to prove 100% original status. Serious collectors will require a hands on inspection and report from Gruhn.
There is a BIG $$$$ difference between player class and collector class.

Hi Dfal, You didn't say where in the world you are. They are worth more offshore than in the USA. Also if you do get it appraised you will not get full appraisal value in a private sale. You might get a majority percentage of the appraisal value, about 70% maybe to 80% tops. I think Gruhn was charging about $300 for an in hand appraisal last I heard and you probably don't want to spend that much since that is over 10% of what it is worth. A photo appraisal would be fine for a later CBS era bass.

If everything on it is original, including original pickup and bridge covers, original pickups, pickguard, tuners, bridge and original case it would appraise for about $3400. Remember appraisal value is inflated since people use that as an insurance value for up to ten years. Right now here in the southeastern USA a ballpark asking price for one like yours in TRUE ORIGINAL Very Good to Excellent condition is about $2500 to $2700 RETAIL. As a private seller you usually won't get retail either, so if I got $2,200 out of it in a private party sale I would have felt I did good. Another option to sell it is on consignment to a dealer like Gruhn. He gets retail, takes a percentage for his trouble and you get the remainder. You might come out ahead this way by a few hundred dollars. He can sell it faster than you can too. You ship it to him at your expense, he appraises it and lets you know the value and terms of the deal. Gruhn is not the only consignment vintage dealer though, so check around. Here there is a consignment dealer about an hour away from me. He takes vintage gear to guitar shows as well so he isn't just limited to who comes into his shop.
