That bass looks great, Steve.

I hope that it all checks out. I hope you have a great time playing it.

Maybe that one had a natural tug bar. I don't know how to tell but didn't the first Precision Basses have lacquered tug bars?

The one on my 52 is maple (assumption), black finish, worn to wood on edges. In looking through my books, in particular the 51-54P book by Detlef Schmidt, it looks like that was correct for this period.

This is the fun part, piece by piece. Drag out the reference books. I should probably get a life.

I have finished authenticating my 51P and find it to be right. There are three negatives, other than some heavy wear. At first, I thought the peg heads and string tree might have been replacement parts. Turns out they are original, but have been polished up, which is unfortunate. It is very tempting to take them off my 52P, which is only four months newer, but has the nice patina. The third issue is the missing tug bar. I had one made, it sucks, it is too long and looks beat up instead of worn. Again, I can take it off my 52P, and likely will, if I cannot find an original, but either way I will still need one. Anyone have a clue where I can find one, or at least find the drawings for it? I need maple/black, not the exotic woods I am finding online.

Thanks,
Steve

Awesome!!! As for the tug bar. If the one on your 52 is the ideal would it be easier to go to a local wood worker with it and just have him duplicate the 52 from measurements he takes off it? Or, if you see someone who makes a really nice one on ebay or where ever you are finding them on line that looks like it is what you want. Why not contact the builder and see if they can do one in maple for you? Maple shouldn't be hard to come by. Heck, if you can do it local have them make a few and then you can try your own hand at relicing them yourself to get the wear just how you want it. I can't imagine having someone cut a small hunk of maple locally would cost you more than the wood and a couple bucks to get them lunch. Good luck and congrats on the bass. They are definitely treasures!
