Hello, I have a Fender Precision from around 77-78 in extremely good condition. It's brown in color which I personally don't see too many of. Just curious of an approximate value. Thanks I will try to figure out how to add pics.. serial number is S755361

Hmmm... Well the 1/4lb swap out will hurt the value. Anyone who knows what they are looking at will know the original pick ups were taken out even if you put them back in. So I wouldn't try to pull the wool over anyone's eyes. Since the original pick ups are the ones shown and if they are still in good working condition that will help take the sting out of the loss of value, though.

Honestly, She is absolutely beautiful. I originally started on a 78, and got another when I came back to bass after over a decade away. For punk rock there is simply no substitute for a late 70's Precision. The 1/4lber gives you the modern hard rock and pop punk tones, but those old 70's pick ups were just so clanky and wild. Really great for edgier music.

As far as value? If everything on her is original but the 1/4lbs then you can probably get somewhere around 1k to 1500 for her. Though I believe that is a walnut on Ash finish so that might boost the price a little. These basses with the exception of the original Antigua finishes don't have a whole lot of collector value as basses of that era tended to be very heavy and QC was hit or miss. The walnut finish wasn't as common as say natural, Oly White or Black so you'll hold some value there.

Honestly, if this bass plays as good as she looks you might be able to get a buyer willing to pay the 1500 or maybe a hair more. Maybe.

Generally speaking, though. Any modification to the electronics makes a bass a player grade bass. I'd say you could most likely easily get around 1250 for her with privately and maybe 8-900 on trade.

That being said. If that bass doesn't weigh over 9.5lbs I'd never get rid of it. Those late 70's P basses were built like tanks. It will easily out live us all.

Many thanks for the reply. Not planning on selling or anything, It's just that I'm more of a guitar player than bass and was at a loss as to the true value of it. I had an idea, but wanted some input from someone a little more "in the know". I figured the original pu's not being in it wouldn't do her any favors... lol Just glad they are still with the bass and available to put back on at any time. It plays and sounds wonderful imo. Wasn't a big fan of the color at first but it has really grown on me over time. It's just one of those that is a pleasure to pick up and play. It is indeed a heavy one though. Thanks again!

I agree, The color is something that grows on you. Back when I was a kid I would have scoffed at it in favor of a white or black one. Now I think they are stunning. They are great basses if the weight isn't something that bothers the player. When I was younger I didn't care. My last 78 weighed 13.5lbs. I cringe at the thought of having that on my shoulder for 3-4 hours a weekend now. However, she sounded incredible and the neck on her was fast as hell. A really great machine for a younger player for sure. Enjoy!

That's a great bass. Swap back the pickup if you want or play it as is.

The pickup has already been taken out and I think you should use it as is but be careful, that bass will attract thieves.

I think the value will be higher if you live near a major metropolitan city in the USA.

Have fun playing that bass!

The color kind of reminds me of the old Gibson EBs, like the EB3 Jack Bruce used to play.

Cool looking bass. Glad you have the original parts, but no need to replace them now, unless you want to. The solder has already been disturbed, so some value is gone, but you can use what you want until you go to sell it.

I am guessing it is "wine" colored, always tough to see from pics. You could have as much as $1200, no less than $1K, assuming the only issue is the replaced pups. KOP was right on.

He was also right in saying you should disclose the pup swap when selling, even if you put the originals back in, which I assume you will.

Very cool bass. Enjoy!
