"professionally refinished in a custom color"

dumb question, but "custom" means ..." other than the colors it came in originally" right? Or does it refer to "custom" colors that fender put out those years?

Definitely a custom color that Fender produced for those years.
Lets say that you bought the 1965 Precision that was pictured earlier in this post. It already has a period correct off white pick guard as used on a custom color instrument.

The reason is you try to put the bass back to an original Fender color that would be correct and desirable for you. You can do this by researching the pickup cavities and neck pockets for evidence of an original custom color like "Lake Placid Blue" for instance.
If you had reasonable evidence that that was the original color of that bass you could make it a more convincing refinish by doing it in that color.

Lets say you found it had been Burgundy Mist Metallic, but you hate that color. You could still do the bass in another correct Fender custom color and maintain that the bass
is a valid restoration for that year, but your refinish is not as convincing since the Burgundy Mist remnants are still in the pickup cavities.

After some years of use or relicing many refinishes are being sold as factory refinishes. That is what many owners maintain.
You be the judge whether this is accurate or not.

very interesting. Not that I could have, but would have been neat to get inside and look for original color / try and date picks up and pots and such. Thanks for all the info.
