Are you sure it's the volume that goes down or the tone it self going flat. the volume might stay the same but due to tonal variance, it might sound as if the volume goes down.

Go to the Basslines site at Seymour Duncan pickups and select any pbass pickup , under the descriptions there should be a wiring diagram link .

I agree. Sounds like a problem in the wiring to me too. Or maybe a bad capacitor or bad pot which is far less likely. It isn't the pickup so that narrows it down. I'd just rewire the thing. First though I'd carefully inspect the wiring to see if anything has obviously moved or is broken. Sometimes the nut securing the pots will get loose which allows the pot to move around which causes a bare wire to touch something it shouldn't or to break away from a connection.

You can get the official Fender diagrams for your specific instrument here: http://www.fender.com/support/diagrams/

It should be an easy fix once you get the strings & pickguard off, which is probably the worst part. Visual inspection might instantly reveal the problem and you can fix it quickly without replacing anything.

At the most for a complete rewiring the tools you'll need are wiring diagram, Phillip's head screwdriver for the pickguard, some needle nose pliers, wire cutter, soldering iron, high quality solder, a sharp edge to strip the insulation if you can't push it back and, if you intend to reuse the pots, you'll want something pointy like an ice pick or paper-clip opened up to poke through the terminal lugs after removing the wire to open them up.

So long as we are talking about a passive singled pickup set P-bass with two rotator pots, the parts you'd need to completely rewire it would be about 18 inches each of good quality black and white stranded wire (you'll have some left over) and the exact pots and cap specified on the diagram. A 30 to 45 minute job to completely rewire it if it comes to that. Pots, cap and wiring packages are sold by several guitar parts sites for about $15. Here's a link to one of them, but make sure it is the right cap and pots specified on the diagram for your Precision: http://basspartsresource.com/bass_electricalwiringkits.htm

Some P-basses like the Deluxe's with the added Jazz pickup have much more complicated wiring and it will take longer and cost a little more.

This should completely cure your problem.

If you don't feel like tackling it yourself, about any guitar tech at any music store knows how to do it and probably already has the parts to do it. It shouldn't cost more than $100 to have a shop completely redo the wiring including all parts and labor. I'd recommend going ahead and having new strings installed and a set up done at this time since you have to remove the strings on most P-basses to get the guard off.

Good Luck!
