BC is correct, as is Brother Dave. Both posts, in their entirety, give you valuable information. One point, and BC, please correct me if I am wrong. Bass Northwest recently hooked up with Kebo's Bass Works, I THINK. Both sellers share instruments for sale on gbase.com. Most, if not all, basses on gbase, are listed extremely high -kind of like buying a used car. I would never use their asking price as and indication of value.

As Brother Dave intimated, there are some things that need to be done in hand, and this bass is one of them. Is it a custom finish? Could it be brought back? If the finish is legit, replacing the electronics with period proper electronics will increase the value, but not back to book value. Every little thing touches value, as small as disturbed solder on a pot.

If you want to spend a couple hundred bucks and find out exactly what you have and what you can do to increase its value, send it up to George Gruhn Guitars - https://guitars.com/appraisals.

He is about the best because his appraisals are for you, not for a sale. I use his company a couple times a year...never felt cheated.

You are correct. They have that partnership and the prices are OUTRAGEOUS IMHO!

Recognize where we are in the collecting world.

Many of those basses (from KEBO's) and other shops are sold at much higher prices than you may pay and most are assembled from parts! There is often no way to tell an original instrument from one assembled from correct original parts. Especially on an bass that is 40 - 60 years old. There are techs who are very good at duplicating original style solder joints and restoration shops that are incredibly talented at restoring damaged bodies and necks. Then you have dealers who have no incentive to tell you about the modifications!

If the average player with limited resources are to ever get a chance at an original finished Fender bass from the 60's or 70's then they have to look for a bass from a private owner and often these basses are modified or assembled from parts.

These basses are every bit as good as an original bass even though they may not command the highest prices. They are real vintage instruments although modified and with replaced pots etc. they still perform as well or better than an "original" bass and may be a better reflection as to what is really available.

What it comes down to is this- If you don't have a reliable provenance of who owned what for how long and documentation proving a link of ownership from when a bass was new until today, then you have no idea if what you think is original is really original.
Even with the provenance in hand you don't really know if something was done to the instrument say 30 years ago. Its a crap shoot!
Sad but true.

To be fair I got my used AVS 57 RI Precision on a price drop from Bass NW. Much cheaper than I could have gotten it anywhere else. However, when it comes to vintage pieces I know of very few dealers who post fair prices for their stock. Generally all dealers inflate their prices. As far as using things to determine value. I'd look to Reverb and finding a piece that is "similar to yours". Reverb posts "estimated going value" on the right hand side for gear. Now, that takes into a lot of factors. However, looking up private sales on Reverb for similar instruments can generally give you a decent indication of what the real world private sale value of instruments is. Then simply take into consideration fees and any incidentals that may add to mark up. For instance special finishes, or other features that may make one bass of the exact same vintage worth more, ect.

Bass Northwest will give you great deals on newer equipment. No contest on that.
