It's always a tremendous sadness when the greats slip away from us like that.

It was hard to find him on a Fender, but his last bass, fretless Ibanez?, was very sharp. The fact he played an EB3 in the late 60s with such sound is a statement unto itself. His solo works were very nice too, but Cream, wow! I am so very happy they had those UK and US reunion gigs, and still sounded great.

Jack Bruce...big fan of what he accomplished. RIP.

When I was playing Cream back in the day, I was a lead guitarist. I never really appreciated him, although I really liked him, it was hard finding bass players back then who could cover him right. I've spent the last two days listening to his stuff and havd been devoting my playing time to it.

In case you haven't heard it yet, rather good.

Thanks Oxfan ..... that was awesome,.... played like only Clapton can play it.
I wonder if Eric will put together a Tribute recording for Jack Bruce like he did for his most recent release which is a Tribute to J.J. Cale (a very good CD)

Without a doubt, The Breeze was a very good album. The Road To Escondido is great being J.J. Cale is actually on it.

I usually like anything Clapton does, he was always the bar I tried to achieve.

I think the death of Jack Bruce will be the final thing that makes him finally retire, he's doing a 70th. birthday tour and album which will keep him occupied for a while.

A lot of the Greats are now hitting the 70 + mark now & I think we're going to start seeing more retirements & unfortunate passing's in the next few years...

True that we are going to see some major losses. I posted about Mr. Bruce on another thread and it was a major loss and he was an influence, maybe fourth on the list. But the fact that more are coming and soon....is a good point.

I went into an inconsolable funk when Michael Jackson and James Brown passed. Yet we still have their music, which has been an educational fact for me. I guess that is good training for what is to come. And you are right, several major passings are in the offing and it will not be pretty.

I guess as long as I like more living musicians than dead ones, I'm OK. When the ratio goes in the other direction....then I'll post a farewell here and vaporize.

Old bassists don't die, they just land an acoustic gig with a folk revival group and sing a little back up harmony...but only if they have to, and only if it is auto-tuned of course.

It is sad to know your days are numbered. However whether you are 19 or 59, they are numbered whether you realize it or not. Don't waste them!

I too was and am a big fan of Jack Bruce. I am sorry to see him pass away. R.I.P.

For your information - his last basses were made by Warwick.
He used a fretless thumb bass and for the cream reunion tour he also used a Custom made Warwick that looked like an early EB bass. -Violin shaped body with a huge humbucker in the neck position. He always sounded like Jack Bruce no matter what he played.

Bruce's liking of the Gibson EB1 Violin Bass was from an influence by long time friend, Felix Pappalardi of Mountain, who used the EB1.
