I've ben offered to buy a used Classic 50's P, for half price (of its new price)
http://www.fender.com/en-DK/series/clas ... pickguard/

Is this a much better bass than the entry level standard mexican P?

A new standard P is only 2/3 of the price of a Classic 50's P (in my country)

Hope to hear some expert opinions on a good P-bass to a reasonable price

 OK isteen lets look at the major differences. The neck is the biggest difference
50's P - - - - - - - - vs - - - - - - - STD P

All Maple 'White Neck' Only - - - - - - - - Both white neck and rosewood fretboard available
Vintage 7.25" (184.1 mm) radius - - - - Modern 9.5" (241 mm) radius
Vintage 1.75" (44.45 mm) nut width - - Modern 1.625" (41.3 mm) nut width

Gold Anodized Aluminum Pickguard - - -3-Ply Parchment Pickguard

Vintage Split Single-Coil pick-up - - - - -Standard Split Single-Coil pick-up

The slimmer modern neck with a slightly flater radius is very comfortable to play and a bit quicker in action. Rosewood fretboard if that's your preference. I like the modern neck with rosewood fretboard on my American Std. Jazz.

A 'vintage' neck is a bit wider and fatter to hold. If you have large hands you may like this better. I had the white neck of my '76 P shaved down about 30 years ago to a dimension and contour that is very much the same as the modern std P.

You'd have to play both back-to-back to see which one you liked best, and also to listen to any tonal differences between p'ups.

Bridge and controls are the same between the two so no difference there. Different color options.

Just pick the one you like best. Either way you're a winner! :)

I'd probably pick a Classic Series Precision over an American Standard.

tHE cLASSIC 50'S is a very good bass. To me it is better than a std Mex p any day of the week. I have a classic 50's and a roadworn P. Good basses and well worth it at half price and I don't know what half price is. I've used both my Classic and Rworn at important gigs. The only possible thing one might want to do with one of those basses is an aftermarket pickup of which in both basses I have installed old Dimarzio Model P pickups . They sound really nice. I'd snatch that bass up.
BTW I own a bunch of USA Fender basses and I like the Classic and Roadworn as much as my USA's .

The pickups are different also. Compare in person if you can. The new model of the Classic Series '50s Precision Bass is also NITRO and that is another difference!

You are quite welcome, isteen.

Remember that are always excellent aftermarket options available. EMG's new Geezer Butler signature pick-up set is getting some rave reviews as is Seymour Duncan's Steve Harris signature set. I put in a set of DiMarzio Split P's in my '76 P Hot Rod to compliment a set of Seymour Duncan Quarter-Pounders. So the sky's the limit when it comes to any P-Bass.

What is especially nice with a Precision is that in a half and hours time with a phillips head screwdriver you can remove the stock pickguard with all electronics attached and undisturbed along with the pick-ups and save them to revert back to factory stock at any time in the future.

So pick the neck that suits you best, as playabilty is every bit as important as tone if not moreso.

Any of the Classic Series basses are nicer than the standards...

I really like my Classic '50s P: I have owned it for 8 years and it has gone to every kind of gig with me. It sounds and feels great. Coming from another bass with a relatively flat fingerboard, I thought the high crown would give me trouble, but the opposite happened. And I love the "vintage" frets: I have 5 basses, and only one with medium jumbo frets, and I wish I could install them on that one.

I also have an AVRI '57 Precision, and the Classic '50s is its equal in everything but finish.

Classic '50s on the left (with a Basslines Quarter Pound pickup) and the AVRI '57 on the right (both are strung with Thomastik-Infeld Jazz Flats):

I'm starting to wonder how rare my creme finish classic is. I've never seen another one.

Wow cream colored huh? Didn't think they made them that color.

I aslo think the 50s series are nicer than the Standards. In fact I would take a Made in Mexico 50s Classic P over my 2013 American Standard P.

I've been able to try out most of the Fender line and to be honest I would take any of them over the American Std... even a Squier lol.. just something about the AM Std just doesn't feel right or sound good to me.... My favourite tho is the Am Spec
