What baked the wire was time and air conditions over time. It's natural aging in some cases like in Florida or other harsh climates. I've seen all kinds of rotton wire in the warehouse of the factory I worked at. It just happens in some cases over time. With the rotted wire there can be corrosion on the wire inside the casing that you can't see- that's why I mentioned replacing all of it.

Thanks SV, this is very insightful. I do like your idea of re-wiring the harness. In this bass, only the one wire is "baking." I never considered what you are saying about them all corroding from within.

CBS did a couple of guitars and basses with 12''-inch radius necks before closing the Fullerton plant and selling Fender to the late Bill Schultz.

Man, how do you guy's find this stuff out? :)

Thanks chromeface.

Yes my 1983 Jazz bass has a 3 screw bridge and it is also the first modern iteration of a bridge that has threads in the center of each saddle so that the strings can be centered over your pickups or the spacing of your strings can be fine tuned to your preference.

I used to own a 1983 Precision bass that was black and it had the same features as your P-bass but it also had the most flamed maple neck that I have ever seen.

Thanks BCbassman, Is there any way you can post a picture of that bridge?

My bridge doesn't have any fine tuners. I'll try to take a picture of it and post it later.
