Hi All,
I'm new to this forum and am looking for some information on a bass I recently picked up second hand. It was advertised as an "Upgraded" precision - having had a jazz pickup and additional volume control knob added along with a gold coloured adonised scratch plate. The serial number is N8371557 which according to the Fender Product dater is 1998 - however I removed the neck and the date stamp is 1999. I need to clarify if it was indeed upgraded or if it is in fact a Hot Rod Precison. I can't get much information on the latter except to say they were manufactured for less than a year in the late 90's.

Pics can be seen here: http://www.adverts.ie/jazz-basses/fende ... ed/6092492

Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Many thanks,
Chris,
Dublin,
Ireland.

Your link doesn't work. Also, the serial number is on the neck plate, or the headstock? If it's on the headstock? Any pictures you can post would help.

Apologies for the link - the serial number is on the head stock. Can't figure how to add pics to thread. Sent a pic to your facebook account.

That is an odd looking combo and I don't ever remember it, but that was a looong time ago. When I asked for pics I just meant a close up pic of the headstock so we could see the decal. I'm sure guys will be a long that could be of more help.

Here's the image...

Is there a specific reason to clarify the difference? If it's for value then either one won't make much difference in price as long as Fender parts are used. One thing is that a routed body will drop the price a lot. Or are you saying it's a factory modified bass?

That's exactly what I'm trying to establish - was the instrument modified to include the new p/u & volume control or is it a factory issue Hot Rod Precision. The routing around the jazz p/u looks a bit rough so possibly a mod.

Around this period Fender had the California Series that had a model a lot like that with the anodized pickguard, P/J pickups and 3 controls and all. However that isn't one that you have. California Series serials were special starting AMXN, so I'm not sure what you have and the photo isn't much help either. Actually in your photo the J pickup looks over-sized to be stock. Hard to tell because to be honest I can't even say for sure it is Fender by the photo you posted. There also was a Hot Rod model with a P/J but they had celluloid pickguards. Dunno what this is.

Suggest contacting consumer relations using the following information with your FULL serial requesting all the information they have on it. The specs they might provide will probably tell you whether it was modded or not.

The California Precision Bass Special was renamed Deluxe P-Bass Special when production moved to Mexico in 1997. Few years later this bass got a ceramic Jazz Bass pickup in the bridge and a 9V-powered active 3-band EQ. Pickguard changed from gold anodized to beveled gold vinyl.

Over the years Fender did several incarnations of the Deluxe P-Bass Special in the form of Factory Special Runs featuring late 1960's-early 1970's tuxedo cosmetics, with the latest boasting passive circuitry and a top-mounted input jack.
