Just like the Custom Shop has done with Eric Clapton's "Blackie", Stevie Ray Vaughan's "Number 1", Eddie Van Halen's "Frankenstrat".....wouldn't it be cool if they borrowed "Duck's" famous '58 P from his son Jeff, to recreate the bass....right down to the same worn stickers, etc.? I wonder how much something like that would cost, considering they were asking something like $25,000 for the EVH "Frankenstrats"......

It would be cool. However, as much as I love Duck Dunn AND 50's Precision basses. For the price they'd probably want I could buy a real 52 Precision. Which is likely why it hasn't been done. That being said. I'd love to see them do a tribute model.

That's a good point. I always felt that the "Duck" Dunn Signature bass could've been better, not to say that what they put out wasn't good, it was a decent bass. It just seemed sort of rushed and wasn't out more than what, a year? But when I see players like Sean Hurley and Dusty Hill (not to take anything away from them) that have Custom Shop models, I think for the impact that Duck has had not just on playing bass, but popular music overall, he should've gotten more props from Fender with a better and longer running representation of his bass. Just my .02

Agreed. Don't get me started on that Hurley bass! I had a lot of disappointment in dealing with the Custom Shop trying to get that mute on a teambuilt 55 Precision for me and they refused to do it because it's on his bass. (Nevermind that it was originally done for Bob Babbit years ago) I love Dusty's work, and had his bass came with a vintage correct neck radius I probably would have just gotten one. However, the Fender Custom Shop seems to be more interested in pumping out modern knock offs like Sadowsky and Lull than actually making Fender instruments.

The Duck had a signature model deal with another company, Lakland. Likely it had an exclusivity clause. The original Fender Dunn might be the only Fender Dunn signature or tribute model. You can't say Fender ignored him. Fender did pay some tribute with the Japanese model which preceded most other signature models.

As for a USA one, just buy the current Sunburst AVRI 58 P-Bass. It is really close to what his two 58's started out as when new.

You could probably pick up a used Custom Shop 58 from some years back for probably only a couple hundred more than a new 58 RI, too. It would already be relic'd for you and will keep it's value. After that it'd just being getting the stickers to do a real tribute model. From what I've heard those older Custom Shop 58 Precisions were pretty sweet, too.

This model started life as a part of their Skyline series with a 2-tone burst finish, gold anodized guard and maple neck.

Throughout the decade Lakland refined the design by adding more colour choices and a rosewood neck option. They also introduced a US-made version featuring a Jazz Bass neck with tuxedo cosmetics and a matching painted head.

After Dunn's death in May 13th, 2012 the Duck signature was renamed the as 44-64 Custom.
