I just bought a new american standard precision bass, the first day it played fine. but the second day the A string started to produce side noises. a strange kind of rattle. so i ajusted the trust rod, the saddels on the bridge, and i carved a tiny bit out of the nut. so the string made a better angle. the rattle was gone for two days. but then it came back. does anybody have a idea what is wrong. and what i can do about it?

Don't mess with the nut to increase the break angle on the A string; you increase this by making sure you have 3-4 of wraps of string around the post, and that none of teh wraps are overlapping.

Do a proper setup by following Fenders guide here: http://www.fender.com/en-GB/support/art ... tup-guide/

Its important to do the setup steps in the right order as laid out in the guide. Each part of the setup affects the others, so if you just randomly adjust 1 element (eg saddles) without doing it methodically you can end up chasing yr tail.

Do it methodically, using the guide above and it'll be the best bass you've ever played on.

I'd try a different set of strings before doing any messing with setup adjustments. Just my opinion.

This almost sounds too obvious, but check for snugness on every single screw. Don't over-tighten though and just make sure they are snug. It might not be the string making the rattle but a sympathetic vibration to the pitch. You really do need nut files for not slots and replacing a nut or slotting one properly is not really a do-it-yourself task for hardly any player. Check snugness of the machine head mounting screws and check every screw all the way to the butt end strap button.

A screw snugness check is something I routinely do about monthly on a daily player. Another but less likely possibility is an off level fret. If not one of these things then it could be any number of things. If not a loose screw somewhere then a real tech with the right tools needs to address it probably and I surely wouldn't whittle on it any more. A new Fender has a warranty specifically for things like this, or at least it did when you bought it new but I don't know about now since nut slot field surgery. You probably shouldn't mention that at the dealer or the service center and you might get away with it.

my 2 cents- alot of times I have found that the A string bridge saddle screw spring will be loose and it will vibrate causing a rattle- I just stretch it out a bit so it is snug against the back of the bridge and the saddle-- and + 1 to Brother Dave- tuner screws are usually a bit loose on almost every bass and guitar I 've ever brought home-- this includes the nuts on top of the headstock that hold the tuners in place. New Fender bass nuts are usually in good shape and don't need attention and +1 on the wraps of string on the A tuner post-- that's real important on a Fender. :)
