I don't use them. I found that I like to wedge my thumb under the E when I play. I didn't realize I did this until the callous on my right thumb split. I pulled it off. The next time I played, I found out the hard way why I had that callous. All of my basses have been tweaked, shim or microtilt, to give myself the extra room between the strings and body to accommodate the thumb.

Since I learned to play bass in the 'transition years' (1962-1967 for low mount to high mount relocation), all my basses since 1963 have had a thumb rest in the high position. Nothing drives a recording engineer bananas more than having to stop a session to tell the bassist that every time he or she rests or removes the thumb from the 'E' or 'B' string, that it makes an unwanted noise in the recording. Using the top edge of a pickup instead works for awhile - until the constant pressure and movement strips out the wood in the pickup pocket where the screws mount the pickup to the body. Saw this happen with a bass on stage in Nashville about 15 years ago and the bassist was seriously surprised when the screws let go and the rubber spacer pushed the pickup up against the underside of the strings.

This is the position that I want the thumb rest in. This is not the standard above string position, I didn't care for it there. I have always used the edge of the pickup if I wanted to rest my thumb while playing on the E string, so I mounted this one flush to the edge of the pup and also sanded the bottom down to the same height as the pup. worked perfect for me!
Note: this is a bass I built, so I didn't change an older Fender model.
