Pre 1974 I like them below and post 73 I like them on top. I use them when they are on the top but I don't use them when they are on the bottom. I like the way they look- Fender put them on there so that's okay by me.
I think it would look goofy to use the one on the bottom- kind of like a caveman thing.

On vintage or vintage-spec instruments I like to see the original accoutrements installed solely because that's the way they were built. In practical terms though, the tug bar and pickup covers are just so much dead weight -- much like the ashtrays on a Strat or Tele. They interfere with the instrument's playability.

Of course the beauty of these accessories is, they're held in place with screws. And what can be screwed on can easily be screwed off. Perhaps I should "screw off" since this response is relatively ambiguous.

My '78 Precision bass came with a thumb rest on top, I added one next to it and used both of them.

The bass I owned before the Precision was a Coronado, it had thumb rests on top and bottom. Only used the top one.

I'd go with the Thumb Rest above the strings, instead of the Tug Bar below the strings.

100% agreed. Mine's under the strings. But I rarely use it, as I play with my fingers most of the time. I usually rest my thumb on the top of the pickups.

Not into thumb rests, probably only because I never became used to them on a bass.

I like covers and thumb rests on my basses. As far as playability, there isn't any problem for me.

As mentioned, Leo thought they were a good idea.

To address a earlier comment, "Me uses thumbrest some time for play, me no caveman! Me hit you with club!"

If you use the thumb rest on the bottom and pluck the strings with your thumb- then first you must bend your head down and turn it sideways like a wanker learner and kind of clinch your tongue with your teeth and yes you are a caveman.

Tugbar. I use it now and then, too. Comes in handy when I'm playing with my thumb.

I use the thumb rest if it is there, but never use the tug bar. I would not order either, except as a replacement on a vintage bass.

Thumbrest? For me it turns out to be the E string.

Absolutely HATE them!

I play with my: thumb; index, and middle fingers almost all the time. A thumb rest is every bit as ludicrous as a tug bar. Garbage all.

I'm pretty ambivalent about them - I don't really use them but so far I have left them on the two basses I own that have them - one on top & one underneath, so I didn't vote in the poll. I actually rest my thumb either on the pickup, the E string or the heel of the neck.
