Nice acquisition you got there, enjoy it and thanks for sharing the photos! Duck is one of my inspirations on playing style.

He and Cropper were like Lennon and McCartney......inseparable.

And that's a beautiful Duck Dunn signature bass!

Yes, that is a beautiful bass. The flash photo makes it look like the body is trimmed in black. It looks cool!

Congrats - I've got one too and love it!

You got a nice low serial number too. There's a Facebook page (if you are not on Facebook you may not be able to view it) where someone is recording serial #'s - his list goes from #007 - #233 (both of which he owns  ). Was going to suggest that you register yours but I see now that you already have!

There has always been a question of how many are out there; from the evidence I've seen I think there was an initial run of about 200 and a second run of maybe about 50 more? I say this because the ones through at least #153 (mine) have the number embossed in the wood, whereas on #233 the number is printed. Would love to know when they started printing the number, might have to start contacting some of the people on that Facebook list.

I always wished they'd do this again in the American Vintage Series, or even a teambuilt CS limited edition. I'd scoop one up in a heartbeat.

Back in the 80's there were a few AVS CAR 57 Reissues from what I've seen. Found one on line that was pretty beat up and the guy wanted new Custom Shop teambuilt prices for it. Crazy.

Enjoy the bass. She's a beauty!

I think Duck was one of the first, if not the first, to rip off those gosh awful ashtrys and fling 'em in the trash can (dumpsters having not been invented yet, or he would have dumpsterized 'em!   For this alone he has my utmost apprication. What a legacy! The ashtrays from my 1976 Precision still reside in the Campbell County, Virginia landfil to this very day. Right along with that stupid tugbar. What a bunch of useless junk! 8)

There's an interview in Vintage Guitar where he talks about it a teeny bit - says he has the first two:

Quote:
Touch on the Duck Dunn signature model Fender Precision Bass.
That was around 1998; it was a Japanese-made limited edition. It was Candy Apple Red with a maple neck. I have the first two made.

Plus, there's this AWESOME ARTICLE where they talk to his son about his basses, plus great pictures! I have the print version (wanted info about the Signature bass) but great to see it online!

(I'm a bit suspicious about the #2 bass in the pictures being what he played in the Blues Brothers movie - different neck and refin perhaps?)

You shouldn't be suspicious. There is a Jazz neck on it now, so yes he swapped it out but that was after it appeared in only one scene, being the dimly Holiday Inn Armada Room lounge scene with Murph & The Magictones in the first BB film. He also used this number 2 on many Post-BB tours and live gigs including the Crosby Stills & Nash tour, Eric Clapton and Aretha Franklin gigs. He was seen with it so often live that it sort of became his unofficial post BB signature look so it was naturally the basis of his Lakland signature model. This is the same '66 that he stripped down to bare wood after the Redding crash and played at Stax for a while before sending it for a factory refinish in Candy Apple Red at Fullerton. It was originally sunburst. He may have had it refinished again for all I know. He was not above refinishing.

While I have no concrete evidence of it, I always suspected he stripped the bass down because the sunburst reminded him too much of his lost friends and the lost '58 which was also sunburst. He played this one stripped to the bare wood for a while and this of course helped the wood dry out a lot whether he meant that to happen or not which made it sound great.

That is a good interview article with his son. Thanks for posting that link!
